St. Thomas island is complete with breath-taking Danish colonial architecture and is loved for its gorgeous town of Charlotte Amalie — the capital of the United States Virgin Islands! From the capital island, you can reach St. John, the smallest of the principal islands, via a quick ferry ride. This sleepy island is a perfect escape for tourists who want to get away from the hustle and bustle of St. Thomas. Nature lovers flock to St. John to visit Virgin Island National Park, which occupies two-thirds of the island. Taking up more than half of St. John, Virgin Island National Park is the single largest tourist destination in the small island. The massive ecological park is home to an abundant flora and fauna, including 800 species of plants and 30 species of tropical birds. Nestled in the 176-acre uninhabited Buck Island, off the northern coast of St. Croix — this Caribbean gem was established as the first U.S. underwater national monument in 1961 by former U.S. President John F. Kennedy. The picturesque marine sea garden features elkhorn coral grottoes, providing an ecosystem for marine life to thrive. Get up close and personal with many tropical fish, such as blue tang and barracuda, and marvel at the awe-inspiring wrecks off the north coast.
Charlotte Amelie is the United States Virgin Islands’ capital and one of the most sought-after Caribbean cruise ports. The quaint city is just as pretty as its name, dotted by charming pastel homes with red roofs, delightful boutiques and celebrated landmarks. On a walking tour, you’ll land at Frederik Lutheran Church, an architectural jewel holding centuries of history within its walls, and the white-washed Government House, adorned by two floors of cast-iron balconies. Saunter the rustic 99-step (actually 103) stairway to navigate the hilly island landscape, and you’ll be rewarded with panoramic views of the city and St. Thomas Harbour.
Perhaps the best way to explore the island of St. Croix is by traversing the Heritage Trail, connecting the old towns of Frederiksted and Christiansted north to Hamm's Bay in the west and to Point Udall to the east. The 72-mile-long route meanders along the scenic coastline, through sugar cane plantations, cattle farms, suburbs and historic towns. At a leisurely pace, you can independently cover the points of interest at your own pace, including the Estate Whim Plantation Museum, Fort Frederik, St. George Botanical Garden, Cruzan Rum Distillery and more.
For a heart-thumping and jaw-dropping experience, brave the Skyride cable car transporting passengers up to Paradise Point — a stunning vista with on-site dining venues and local souvenir shops. Enjoy the dramatic views of the historic downtown Charlotte Amelie, and when the skies are clear, you can catch a glimpse of the neighbouring islands of St. Croix and Puerto Rico.
