Hooiberg is a conical hill in Oranjestad, looming over the horizon like an omnipresent postcard wherever you are in the island. Its name translates to ‘haystack’ in Dutch, soaring at a height of over 500 feet. It’s the only mountain on the island with a built-in stone stairway, making it an easy hike of nearly 600 steps to the peak. As soon as you reach the top, you can soak up the 360-degree views of the island below and the Caribbean sea beyond, with partial sightings of nearby Venezuela.
With its tropical climate and year-round sunshine, there’s no such thing as bad timing when it comes to visiting Aruba. However, the most ideal time for the best weather and lower prices are between April and August. June and July are the windiest time of the year, so you can enjoy the cool breeze as you laze on the shores. Aruba also makes a prime destination for a winter sun cruise.
Getting around Aruba’s capital, Oranjestad, is made hassle-free by the various public and private transportation mode options that you can use. Taxis and local buses operate from day to night. Car rentals are also available for a more convenient way of exploring the island. If you’re looking for an affordable and unique way, free open-air trolleys run in a loop from the cruise port to the downtown area. The streets in the city centre are also walkable, so pedestrians can stroll around on foot conveniently.
The Aruban Florin is the national currency of Aruba, but US Dollars are also widely accepted in many establishments. ATMs are also available in major areas. Credit card payments are accepted in hotels and restaurants too.
