Croatia Cruises

Discover the quaint towns & beaches

Bordered by the Adriatic Sea, Croatia is a charming coastal country blessed with a stretch of sun-kissed beaches and a string of quaint terracotta-capped hamlets. It’s also home to many well-preserved Roman and mediaeval monuments and UNESCO World Heritage sites, making it one of the best destinations in Europe for history buffs and beach aficionados alike.

A Croatia cruise takes travellers to the walled city of Dubrovnik, an Adriatic treasure that rivals the likes of Rome, Italy and Athens, Greece with its fascinating history hidden behind the seaport walls. Split is no less than enchanting as Dubrovnik, offering a laid-back vibe and exciting nightlife. Both cities have been used as a set for the famous fantasy series Game of Thrones; Kings Landing was filmed in Dubrovnik throughout most of the seasons, while the Diocletian Palace in Split served as the former slave city of Meereen.

Beyond being a fictional setting, which significantly boosted its screen tourism, Croatia boasts more picturesque ports to elevate your journey ashore. A beautiful mix of breathtaking beaches and Roman and Venetian ruins can be found in Zadar, and a hilltop fortress makes an awe-inspiring backdrop for Hvar town. Embark on one of our Mediterranean cruises, and discover stunning beaches, rugged islands, rich history, and old towns as you sail through the Adriatic!

Croatia Cruise Highlights

Diocletian Palace, Split

Diocletian Palace, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is an ancient complex that reflects Roman palatial architecture. This imposing palace was built as a combined imperial residence, military fortress, and fortified town. Now, it’s the historic core and the living heart of Split. You’ll realise it’s full of people, restaurants, and shops as you explore the meandering cobbled streets - radiating a bygone charm at every turn. Gates enclosed all sides, but these gates didn’t survive the test of time, although ruins of carved stone pillars and arches remain visible today. Game of Thrones fans will also be delighted to know that this place was where Daenerys trained her dragons!

Banje Beach, Dubrovnik

Set just outside Dubrovnik’s city walls is Banje Beach, a renowned pebble beach dotted with sunbeds and white-chiffon-draped baldachin beds. Admire the old town and the Lokrum Island while working on your tans on the shores. A plethora of thrilling water activities await here to keep your adrenaline pumping, such as kayaking tours, skiing, wakeboarding, and tubing. The sun rays slip through Dubrovnik’s mediaeval buildings at sunset, making the scenery more pleasant to the eyes! And when the night falls, the place is lit by flickering candles and flaming torches from the shops and restaurants.

Fortica Fortress, Hvar

Dominating the horizon of Hvar, Fortica is perched atop the island and illuminates with a golden glow at night. This Spanish fortress has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site, and locals colloquially call it Španjola. To get to the top, you’ll need to walk through the narrow, winding streets lined with pine trees and aloe vera foliage. Alternatively, a scenic taxi ride is available for hassle-free transfer. The panoramic views of the town, the surrounding Pakleni islands and the sea beyond from this mediaeval castle make the trudge worthwhile.

History and Culture

History and Culture

Croatian culture is a fusion of those from different ethnicities and the assimilations that have taken place among various cultures. The country’s culture is deeply rooted in its long and unique history, from prehistoric times through when Romans ruled the roost up to the modern-day independent Croatia that resonates resilience and enduring spirit. Each era has left a significant contribution to Croatia’s traditions, language, arts, architecture, and religion - shaping it into the rich and diverse society that it is today. Here are some of our favourite cultural and historic sites, should you want to discover anecdotes about Croatia's interesting past.

  • Pula Arena is an emblematic Roman Amphitheatre constructed under Emperor Vespasian’s reign, who was also responsible for the construction of the Colosseum in Rome.

  • The Cathedral of St. James in Šibenik, a UNESCO-listed site, is one of the country’s greatest architectural feats that uses Renaissance style with Gothic features.

  • The Walls of Dubrovnik, a spectacular ring of defensive walls and forts encompassing the historic city centre that’s affectionately dubbed as the Pearl of the Adriatic.

Things to Do in Croatia

Snap a photo with the ‘Maiden with the Seagull’

The Maiden with the Seagull is an iconic seafront landmark in Opatija that graces the Lungomare promenade overlooking Kvarner Bay. This statue was built to honour the memory of count Arthur Kesselstadt, who met his tragic demise to a raging storm near where the maiden erects. Now a prized possession and a recognisable symbol of the town, it’s a quintessential experience to snap a photo with this seafront statue!

Ride a cable car in Dubrovnik

This four-minute ride takes passengers on a magical journey from the north to the peak of Srd Hill. Marvel at the small city sprawled out below you and the pristine blue sea stretching into the horizon. Pop into a cafe or small restaurant on the mountain for a coffee or meal before making your way down to catch the panoramic sights of the city and the Adriatic Sea. On a clear day, you can view as far as 37 miles, including the neighbouring centuries-old Imperial Fortress, considered the city’s symbol of defence.

The entire town has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site, thanks to its great cultural importance. While here, you can visit the vibrant Trogir Old Town Fruit Market, where you can find plenty of local produce, such as honeys, wines, and olive oils!
