Nicaragua Cruises

The Land of Lakes & Volcanoes

Often referred to as the Land of Lakes and Volcanoes, Nicaragua is a top cruise holiday destination in Central America – brimming with Spanish colonial heritage, tranquil freshwater lakes and dramatic volcanic landscapes at almost every turn. The largest Central American country is bordered by the Pacific and Caribbean on both sides, offering idyllic white-sand beaches and turquoise waters to beguile every sun-seeker.

San Juan del Sur is one of the principal ports for cruises to Nicaragua, set on the southwest coast and ideal for surfing, yoga and water sports fanatics! North of San Juan del Sur is the historic town of Corinto – another cruise port on the Pacific Ocean along the route to the Panama Canal that serves as the gateway to Leon Nicaragua. Whether you’re a culture aficionado, history buff, nature lover or beach enthusiast – there’s something on a cruise to Nicaragua!

Things to Do in Nicaragua

Explore San Juan del Sur

San Juan del Sur is a quaint port town on the Pacific coast, known for its vibrant surfing scene and nightlife. Maderas Beach is a popular spot for surfing and unwinding – with its huge waves, constant offshore winds and picturesque sunsets! For a secluded vibe, head to Marsella Beach where you can relax and let your hair down without the bustling crowds. The port town is also home to the Christ of Mercy – the world’s second-tallest statue of Jesus next to one of the 7 wonders of the world Christ the Redeemer in Brazil. The hike up the towering statue offers panoramic news of San Juan del Sur and the ocean beyond. The iconic Sunday Funday is also an unmissable experience, where you can enjoy live music, pool parties and delicious drinks!

Enjoy wildlife-viewing

With Nicaragua’s vast woodlands and fresh waters, you can expect diverse species of wildlife and marine life to discover! Spot an abundance of tropical birds like parrots and macaws in the dense nature reserves as you make your way through the tropical trails or meander through the Limon River. Dubbed the ‘City of Mists,’ Jinotega is surrounded by mountains covered in lush cloud forests, perfect for observing a variety of birdlife and wildlife like adorable sloths clinging on to tree branches. Get up close and personal with a howler monkey in San Juan del Sur or visit the main nesting grounds of the endangered olive ridley and leatherback turtles at La Flor.

Admire the colonial architecture

Nicaragua is steeped with Spanish colonial architecture, as seen in the neoclassical cathedrals and Spanish colonial landmarks that have withstood the test of time. Granada is considered Nicaragua’s epicentre of history and culture, boasting terracotta-tiled roofs, cobblestone streets and a quaint main square dominated by the bright yellow-coloured facade of the Cathedral of Granada. Other architectural gems in the city are the impressive Guadalupe Church on La Calzada dating to 1626 and the ornately restored Iglesia La Merced built in 1534. Managua is another cultural hotspot, home to the striking Old Cathedral of Managua.

Sample an authentic gallo pinto

Embark on a culinary journey in Nicaragua and sample an authentic gallo pinto – a staple dish in Nicaragua! Usually consumed for breakfast, it’s the national dish shared by Costa Rica and Nicaragua. The local delicacy consists of rice and beans as base, traditionally mixed with sliced vegetables and paired with scrambled or fried egg. Gallo Pinto directly translates to ‘spotted rooster’ in English for its distinct speckled appearance of red beans and white rice cooked together. It’s usually topped with crumbled dry cheese, enriching its flavour and adding a nice finish!
