Cambodia Cruise Highlights

Angkor Wat

Cambodia is famous for its ancient temples and Angkor Wat is arguably the most famous among them, drawing a lot of culture enthusiasts and history buffs around the globe. Built in the 12th century by Khmer King Suryavarman II, this UNESCO World Heritage Site prides itself as the largest religious monument in the world. But the charm of the archeological site of Angkor goes beyond the iconic Angkor Wat, with more awe-inspiring temple ruins to explore, such as the ‘jungle temple’ Ta Prohm and Banteay Srei which features intricate stone carvings and fine grained rose-pink sandstone. Set in the heart of Angkor Thom, the longest-lasting capital of the ancient Khmer Empire, is Bayon Temple – known for the distinct smiling faces engraved on the temple’s towers.

Royal Palace and the Silver Pagoda

The Royal Palace is a testimony to Cambodia’s opulent Khmer architecture, crowned by classic Khmer roofs, towering spires, and ornate gliding. Set in Phnom Penh, this imposing complex of buildings once dominated the capital’s skyline. Now, this elegant palace provides an insight into Cambodia’s rich history, showcasing a myriad of artefacts and displays from past eras. The vast royal residence is home to the Silver Pagoda – a striking structure known for its silver-plated floor adorned by over 5,000 gleaming silver tiles. Another star attraction in the complex is the Throne Hall, the only building tourists are allowed to enter, which is used for notable events and celebrations!

Bokor National Park

Situated in the charming town of Kampot, Bokor National Park is a massive national park that incorporates lush greenery, verdant mountains, and French colonial settlements in one magnificent setting. This protected area is idyllically perched on the highlands of the Damrei Mountains, so most of this national park can be found 1,000 metres above sea level – overlooking the panoramic views of Kampot and beyond. The key attraction in this national park is the abandoned hill station, taking guests back to the time when Cambodia was under French rule. Some of the unmissable sights in this colonial outpost include the Lok Yeay Mao statue, the eerie Le Bokor Palace Hotel, the old Catholic Church, and the ruins of the Black Palace.

Local Cuisine

Local Cuisine

Cambodia is a foodie paradise, offering a wide variety of national dishes, with elements of foreign cuisines and touched up with a unique Cambodian flare. Often dubbed as the ‘cuisine of contrasts,’ Cambodian food is known for its use of contrasting flavours in every dish. Thanks to the country’s opulence in waterways, freshwater fish and seafood are among the notable ingredients of every meal – often paired with its staple aromatic rice. Here are some of the best dishes you need to try:

  • Nom banh chok is a Khmer noodle dish, typically served as a breakfast meal or an afternoon snack. These fresh rice noodles are hand-made, saturated with fish gravy and fragrant herbs and simmered in coconut milk.

  • Kampot is famous for its pepper plantations and fresh seafood, hence the popular delicacy is Kampot pepper crab, in which crabs are fried up with garlicky sauce and garnished with green peppercorns!

  • Amok trey is Cambodia’s national dish, a Khmer steamed fish curry tenderly steamed in banana leaves to achieve the mousse-like consistency, which makes it melt in the mouth.

Things to Do in Cambodia

Bask on the beaches of Sihanoukville

Sihanoukville is a hotspot for sun-seekers, with endless sunshine and white-sand beaches to greet you. Thanks to its strategic position along the Gulf of Thailand, this picturesque seaside town is dubbed one of the premier beach destinations in Cambodia. Otres Beach is among the most-visited beaches around the area, surrounded by tall palm trees providing plenty of shade for a refreshing dip. Independence Beach, also known as Victory Beach, is a unique crescent-shaped beach – complete with breath-taking ocean views and thrilling water sports! For a serene escape, head to Sokha Beach, known for its high-end resorts and 5-star beach experience!

Learn about Cambodia’s tormented past

Most Mekong River cruises include an optional tour of the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum and the Killing Fields, which both chronicle the dark past of Cambodia during the Khemer Rouge era. Whilst the genocide museum is not exactly a place of delight, it provides tourists a glimpse of the country’s tormented past where several episodes of torture and execution took place. The infamous Killing Fields is another historic site that reflects the notorious history the Cambodian citizens had experienced under the extreme communist guerilla group. The land served as an execution and mass grave site during this tragic period in history…

Check out Khmer artwork

Discover Cambodia's largest museum of cultural history, containing the world’s finest collection of Khmer art – from sculpture and statues to pottery and bronzes. The National Museum of Cambodia is housed in an elegant terracotta-coated building with a traditional design and curved tiled roofs. The museum’s red sandstone facade appears most attractive at sunset, when its striking colour beautifully blends with the pale orange tint of the afternoon sun dipping into the horizon. Swot up Cambodia’s culture and history through four different periods, from prehistoric times to post-Angkorian era. Once you’ve soaked in enough exhibits and artefacts, take a relaxing stroll around the well-manicured courtyard filled with trees and tranquil ponds.
