History and Culture
Besides its inherent natural beauty, the Canaries is also blessed with a fascinating history dating to over a thousand years ago. Its long history can be traced back to the 1st century when explorers from Rome, Italy set foot at a place they believed to be uninhabited until they discovered ruined buildings and traces of human civilisation. When European explorers mapped the islands, they came across indigenous tribes that were referred to as Guanches. In the 14th century, the Europeans established settlements on the islands and eventually began colonising them at the turn of the 15th century.
Many cultures have lived and thrived on this archipelago, shaping their identity through the mix of native and foreign cultures passed on from generation to generation. These Atlantic islands are rich in local tradition, cuisine, and the arts, with strong influences from Africa, United States of America, and Europe, particularly the Spanish. Here are some ways to immerse yourself in the region’s cultures, arts, and architecture:
- Celebrate the Carnival of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, held one month before the Lent season, where people enjoy grand festivities prior to the fasting period.
- Visit the Tenerife Espacio de las Artes (Tenerife Arts Space) or the Museum of Contemporary Art of La Palma to appreciate the local art and photography of native artists.
- Walk around the Old Town in Santa Cruz, reflecting a rich maritime heritage with historic buildings dotting the area, such as the Concepción Church and the Palacio de Carta.
