Must-visit Places in the Far East

Tokyo, Japan

Ohayo from Tokyo — Japan’s capital and the World’s largest city! Sky-high towers and neon-lit buildings combine with historic temples and tranquil Japanese gardens in this action-packed capital. Tokyo is affectionately nicknamed ‘Big Mikan,’ a deliberate reference to New York’s popular moniker, ‘Big Apple,’ for its apparent resemblance to the City that Never Sleeps when it comes to fast-paced lifestyle and vibrant colours! Scramble the World’s busiest Shibuya Crossing, climb the Tokyo Tower and walk down the aisle of cherry blossom trees in Ueno Park.

Seoul, South Korea

Where historical heritage meets modern-day glory, Seoul is a huge metropolis packed with cloud-scraping buildings, high-tech subways, pop culture, Buddhist temples, palaces and street markets. After all, it’s the place that has seen the dawn of the K-pop and K-drama phenomenon that is now swiftly seeping across borders and taking the world by storm. Gyeongbokgung Palace and Bukchon Hanok Village are the notable attractions for culture and history buffs, whilst Myeongdong and Hongdae are the hotspots for urban arts and shopping. The iconic N Seoul Tower offers panoramic views of downtown Seoul and the surrounding mountains.

Koh Samui, Thailand

Koh Samui is a pristine island in Thailand, complete with powdery-white beaches, coconut groves and dense, mountainous rainforest. Relax and unwind and let life’s stresses ebb away in this tropical paradise. Thanks to the Buddhist temples and serene jungle landscape surrounding this island, the air you’ll breathe is fresh and crisp! Lounge on the beaches, discover the Secret Buddha Garden and see the famous golden Big Buddha that the island is known for! Thai people call their nation Muang Thai which means “Land of the Free,” and you’ll soon find that this sentiment sticks…

Local Cuisine

Local Cuisine

The Far East cuisine is globally patronised for all the good reasons. Far East Asian food is known for its use of herbs, spices and unique flavours — also highlighting the cultures of every country that serves their staple dishes on the table. From the street food in Taiwan’s night markets to the serene tea houses in Kyoto, the Far East region boasts a rich tapestry of flavours to satisfy every mood and taste. Don’t miss out on some of the most popular delicacies in the culinary landscape as diverse and broad as the region…

  • Sample Japan’s sushi and sashimi, which are often served as a set meal – sushi is rolled vinegared rice mixed with other ingredients while sashimi is a thinly sliced raw fish.

  • Nasi Lemak is commonly regarded as Malaysia’s national dish, which essentially comprises steamed coconut rice topped with sambal (chilli-based sauce).

  • Vietnam’s staple, Pho, is a noodle soup dish that’s loved all around the world, served in Vietnamese households, street-stalls and restaurants worldwide.

Things to Do in the Far East

Catch a tan in Boracay

Boracay is a beautiful island in the Philippines known for its palm-fringed beaches and lavish resorts. The White Beach is one of its main claims to fame, boasting white sand and stunning sunset views, whilst Diniwid Beach is the perfect alternative for those who wish to escape large crowds and soak up serenity. When you’re not catching a tan on the shores, try the high-altitude water activities like windsurfing and parasailing. No trip to Boracay will ever be complete without cliff-diving in Ariel’s Point, so be sure to tick this off on your bucket list!

Embrace culture in Kyoto

Once the capital and now dubbed the cultural heart of Japan, Kyoto is a place of ancient heritage and Old-World charm. It’s home to an abundance of Buddhist temples, Hindu shrines and imperial palaces — almost all are designated as UNESCO World Heritage Sites! Yasoka Pagoda, the last standing structure in Hokanji Temple, is one of the most recognisable landmarks and photographed sites in Kyoto. Besides visiting the cultural sites, there’s plenty of other ways to embrace the ancient capital’s traditions, such as taking part in the tea ceremony and watching geisha performances.

Head to the clouds on Danang’s Golden Bridge

One of Danang’s major highlights is the imposing Golden Bridge — a 500-foot-long arched pedestrian bridge set against the Ba Na Hills backdrop. Its unique feature is the giant pair of hands that seem to hold the golden thread of walkway atop the cliffs. Suspended in the air at a height of 1,414 metres above sea level, strolling along the bridge is virtually the same as walking on the clouds with the support of the ‘hands of God.’ Enjoy uninterrupted views of Danang and the surrounding lush greenery above.

Far East Cruises FAQs

When is the best time to go on a Far East cruise?

For East Asian countries like Japan and South Korea, the most ideal time would be in spring (April and May) for the best weather and scenery. It’s also the season for the world-famous Japan cherry blossoms. Meanwhile, if your cruise is focused on Southeast Asian ports, the dry season is between December and April, perfect for beaches and outdoor activities.

Where do Far East cruises go?

The Far East is a popular destination for world cruises, which often includes sailings to the ports of Japan, South Korea, Thailand and China. Cruise ships also sometimes visit some port destinations in Southeast Asia, such as Manila in the Philippines, the East Coast of Malaysia and Singapore.

Which cruise lines offer cruises to the Far East?

A Far East cruise is one of the best ways to experience Asia’s exotic cultures, delicious cuisine and notable sights, hence making it a famous destination for cruises. Some of the cruise lines that take advantage of this and offer itineraries across the Far East include Celebrity Cruises, Royal Caribbean International and Norwegian Cruise Line.

Is there a tipping culture in the Far East countries?

Monetary tipping is not mandatory or expected in most Far East nations. In fact, it can be turned down or sometimes even considered inappropriate in some places like Japan and China. Meanwhile, for most Southeast Asian countries, tipping is generally viewed as a positive gesture. Since the tipping culture varies per country, be sure to do your research before visiting.

Is English spoken in the Far East countries?

Most locals in the Far East countries can speak and understand English. Some are even proficient and use it as a conversational language like Singapore, Philippines and Malaysia. All in all, it’s still handy and helpful to learn some basic phrases and sentences to be able to interact and communicate with the locals in the ports you’re visiting.
