Oman, a Middle East Oasis

Oman is an underrated slice of paradise in the Middle East, where unique natural landscapes, rich cultural heritage and pristine beaches all come together to create a postcard-perfect picture! Muscat is the country’s charming capital, full to the brim with mosques, markets and museums. The time-honoured city walls and watchtowers wrapping the old town blend well with the high-rise buildings and high-end shopping malls in the quaint capital, with the iconic Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque as the city’s stunning centrepiece.

Sitting on the Northern coast of Oman’s Musandam Peninsula, reaching across towards Iran, Khasab is a romantic port town with jutting magical fjords that will make you think you’ve stumbled across a surreal Norway. The lush landscape and dazzling beaches around Salalah is the intriguing result of a quirk of nature, offering a perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of the city. Want a glimpse into Oman’s maritime past? Sur is the perfect place to be, a peaceful port town steeped with maritime history and hidden gems!

Things to Do in Oman

See the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque

No cruise to Oman will ever be complete without seeing the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque – an architectural marvel in Muscat that attracts thousands of tourists and pilgrims from all around the world! The grand mosque is characterised by soaring minarets, beautifully landscaped gardens, intricate mosaics, and an elegant prayer hall. Its modern Islamic architecture features include arched walkways, ornate mosaic tiles, eye-catching dome and the gigantic glass chandelier that hangs overhead the men’s prayer hall. Note that the mosque is open to the public from 8 am to 11 am and is usually closed during Fridays.

Step back in time in ancient Nizwa

The remote location, and limited infrastructure here, until recent times, means that Oman’s former capital – Nizwa – has been left to live life at its own pace. The ancient city offers a glimpse into Oman’s authentic traditional life and rich cultural heritage, where towering minarets and domes adorn the sand-coloured buildings, set against the backdrop of the majestic Hajar Mountains! Dating to the 17th century, the Nizwa Fort is a must-visit for history buffs – an old, well-preserved castle with an iconic cylindrical tower that rises over the ancient city. You can also drop by Nizwa souqs, where you can shop for coffee pots, handcrafts, local products and more!

Get in touch with nature in Salalah

Salalah is the ideal escape from the buzzing city vibes of Muscat, boasting an idyllic geographical location bordered by the Arabian Sea to the south and the rugged landscapes of the Dhofar mountains to the north. The picturesque port is the capital of southern Oman's Dhofar province, offering pleasant weather and plenty of natural wonders! Admiring the Wadi Darbat in the Dhofar region is among the best things to do near Salalah. The magnificent series of low waterfalls cascade into turquoise pools during the Khareef season, perfect for a relaxing soak surrounded by a breath-taking scenery!

Take a tour of the Royal Opera House

Set in Muscat, the Royal Opera House is a sight to behold! This Islamic architectural feat showcases the design of the contemporary era, inspired by historical fortresses and a myriad of creative spaces from around the world. The entire complex is composed of a grand theatre, auditorium, well-manicured gardens, art centre and cultural markets. It’s a premier venue for musical arts and culture, hosting a variety of productions – from regional to international opera, ballet, concerts and family shows. Whether you want to experience the magic of live theater or simply admire the opera house’s fine details on a guided tour, there’s plenty of ways to explore Oman’s largest theatre!

Where do cruises to Oman go?

Most Oman cruises usually set sail to the vibrant capital, Muscat. Cruise ships also set sail to the ports of Khasab, Salalah and Sur.

Is there a tipping culture in Oman?

Tipping in Oman is not customary and most often not expected like much of the Middle East countries. However, if you’re feeling a little generous, offering a small gratuity to hotel staff, cab drivers and tour guides will be greatly appreciated. The standard range of tip is 5% to 10% of the bill.

What should I wear in Oman?

Oman is predominantly a Muslim country, hence it’s important to dress modestly and conservatively to respect their cultures and traditions. As a general rule of thumb, women are expected to have their legs and knees covered, as well as their shoulders and chest, especially in public spaces. For women, loose-fitting clothing like long pants, long-sleeved shirts and a headscarf are recommended. Meanwhile, men should wear long pants when visiting mosques and souqs.
