La Palma Cruises

See the stars in La Palma

La Palma is a peaceful oasis in the Canary Islands, renowned for its lush greenery and natural beauty. Although the island’s surface area is small, its dramatic cliffs and volcanic landscapes make it one of the highest islands in the world. Locals affectionately call the tiny island “La Isla Bonita” which translates to “The Pretty Island” for its pristine beaches, ancient forests and stunning geologic formations. The stunning island in Spain is also an ideal destination for winter cruises – where stars, sands and sights are endless! The incredible landscape that surrounds the cities and towns plays host to a number of marvellous mountains and vast volcanoes.

Arriving at the port of Santa Cruz, the island’s capital and largest city – you’ll be transported back in time as you marvel at the centuries-old architecture, original colonial layout and cobbled streets. Some of the most noteworthy sites in the capital are the Renaissance-style complex Plaza de España, Naval Museum of Santa Cruz de La Palma and Playa de Santa Cruz de La Palma. That aside, nature lovers will be delighted to experience La Caldera de Taburiente’s cascading waterfalls and freshwater springs – just get ready to hike on one of the hiking trails inside the national park. And don’t miss the island’s starry night skies on your La Palma cruise – lay back, look up, and lose yourself while gazing at La Palma’s night sky!

La Palma Cruise Highlights

Santa Cruz

The island’s historic capital of La Palma is brimming with attractions and things to do for history buffs and culture enthusiasts alike. This busy port contains the Plaza de España, the capital’s main square steeped with a mix of Renaissance and Canarian architecture. Wandering along the old streets of Santa Cruz, you’ll find the church and belltower of El Salvador and the well-preserved wooden Canarian balconies along the Avenida Maritima. You can also learn about the island’s maritime history in the  Naval Museum of Santa Cruz de La Palma and enjoy shopping in Calle O’Daly.

Caldera de Taburiente National Park

Gear up for an adventurous hike through the trails of Caldera de Taburiente National Park, featuring a sprawling volcanic crater surrounded by towering mountain walls. This rugged area is idyllically located in the centre of La Palma, covered by dense canary pine forests and cut by gorgeous waterfalls with a fascinating series of deep ravines intersections. Roque de los Muchachos, set inside the national park, is the highest point of elevation in the island – home to the famous observatory offering the best views of the night skies and the nearby Canary Islands!

Charco Azul

Charco Azul is a stunning natural swimming pool at the edge of the sea, suitable for travellers hoping to relax with a refreshing morning swim or laze under the warm sunshine in the surrounding volcanic rocks. This bathing zone has gained immense fame among tourists for its massive rock pools, protecting swimmers from the giant waves while being able to enjoy the views of the sea beyond the rock formation. This sheltered saltwater pool is complete with amenities, including shower and changing areas, railings and parking, so you can expect a stress-free sunbathing moment!

Things to Do in La Palma

Sample local wines in Calle O’Daly

Calle O’Daly is a pedestrian-friendly thoroughfare in Santa Cruz, lined with a wide assortment of restaurants and boutique shops. This charming colonial-era street also offers an opportunity for visitors to sample all sorts of locally produced wines and purchase their favourites! One of the native fine wines you can taste here is the "Vinos de Tea," a local speciality made from Tinta Negra Mole grapes and aged in pine barrels.

Gaze at the stars in Roque de los Muchachos Observatory

La Palma’s award-winning starry night skies are its crowning glory! Roque de los Muchachos Observatory is argued to be the second-best location for stargazing in the northern hemisphere after the Mauna Kea Observatory in Hawaii. La Palma has been hailed by the UNESCO World Biosphere for its excellent celestial viewing opportunities, receiving a Starlight Award. This observatory soars into a sea of clouds, where the atmosphere is clear and stable – making it one of the best places on Earth for astronomical observations!

Learn about the history of silk making at El Paso Silk Museum

La Palma keeps the art and tradition of silk-weaving very much alive, which you can get a glimpse of at El Paso Silk Museum. Learn about the process of silk-making, from the rearing of silkworms to spinning all the way to embroidery. Browse through the textile exhibits or join craft courses for a complete experience. The still-operating old looms produce exquisite silk art works that can be purchased in the gift store, so be sure to get your memorabilia to commemorate your trip!
