Take a Trinidad & Tobago Holiday

Trinidad and Tobago is a picturesque twin island in the Caribbean, close to Venezuela in South America. Whilst Trinidad pulses with life, the smaller and unspoiled island of Tobago is the place for a restful and relaxing holiday. Sun and sand abound, the dual-island Caribbean nation basks in glorious beaches and year-round sunshine. It’s also popular for its grand Carnival celebrations, as well as diverse cultures and delectable local cuisine!

Port of Spain is the capital and main port for Trinidad and Tobago, loved for its multicultural Caribbean character, homegrown calypso soundtrack and huge Carnival! The colourful capital is set in Trinidad and is a melting pot of cultures, with a mix of influences from Africa, Far East, India, Europe, and the New World. Set in Tobago, Scarborough is a quaint coastal town with lush botanic gardens, historical sites and great outdoors. The sleepy fishing village of Charlotteville is another gateway to Tobago, offering rich culture and sandy beaches.

Things to Do in Trinidad and Tobago

Celebrate the Carnival

Affectionately nicknamed ‘The Greatest Show on Earth,’ the Trinidad and Tobago Carnival is the biggest and most celebrated festival in the Caribbean twin-island nation. The Carnival is held annually, every Monday and Thursday before its culmination on Ash Wednesday. The festive event is celebrated to commemorate and honour generations of resistance and rebellion against enslavement. Watch as the streets of Port of Spain come alive with grand parades, colourful costumes, and heart-thumping rhythms of calypso and soca music. Jive into the endless fun as you immerse yourself in the next-level parties and savour local delicacies like macaroni pie and callaloo.

Spend a day in Scarborough

Scarborough is one of Trinidad and Tobago’s main tourist areas alongside the capital Port Spain. It’s idyllically located on the southern coast of the island of Tobago, home to a couple of historic landmarks, breath-taking beaches, and botanical gardens. One of the town’s major attractions is the well-preserved Fort King George – an elevated 18th-century fort overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, featuring canons, artifacts and a museum. For a nature break, stop by the Scarborough Botanical Garden which is only a 10-minute walk from the port. Here, you can admire tropical plants while taking a leisurely walk or having picnics.

Hit the beach

Endless sunshine and pristine beaches await in Trinidad and Tobago! Pigeon Point is a popular beach and nature reserve in Tobago, boasting swaying palm trees, sugar-white sand  and crystal-clear waters. Off the coast of Pigeon Point is Buccoo Reef, a snorkelers’ paradise, with abundant marine life and stunning coral gardens. Another beautiful beach is the Maracas Beach in Trinidad, perfect for various water activities like surfing, swimming or simply unwinding and lounging under the sun. This beach strip is also a haven for foodies and has a vibrant nightlife scene! Las Cuevas Beach is situated on the north coast of Trinidad, offering a secluded beach experience and a laid-back atmosphere.

Be in awe of the Bamboo Cathedral

Seeking a nature retreat in Trinidad and Tobago? Bamboo Cathedral is the place to be! Lying on the Tucker Valley in Chaguaramas, this 300-metre stretch of paved trail is surrounded with towering bamboo trees that soar up to the skies, with some bending over to each other and creating a captivating natural archway. The trail leads to an abandoned United States military satellite tracking station, a historic site overlooking the bay. The hike takes 40 minutes to get to the radar base from the Bamboo Cathedral.  Stroll along the bamboo-lined path dappled with sunlight as you listen to the soothing sound of the leaves rustling and the birds chirping – truly the ultimate healing experience!

Listen to the buzz of birds

A haven for birdwatchers, Trinidad and Tobago hosts a myriad of bird sanctuaries – where you can see various bird species such as hummingbirds and the Scarlet Ibis. Asa Wright Nature Centre is a hotspot for bird-watchers, home to over 400 species of native birds as well as other groups of animals, including reptiles and amphibians! The 600-hectare piece of land was formerly a cocoa and coffee plantation transformed into a nature reserve, where you can spot different hummingbird species, channel-billed toucans and more. Meanwhile, Caroni Bird Sanctuary is where you can observe Trinidad and Tobago’s national bird – Scarlet Ibis!
