Wonders of Ancient Egypt

Egypt boasts a myriad of awe-inspiring treasures and wonders. Here are some of the most famous ancient cities, sites and monuments that you should see at least once in your life:

The Pyramids of Giza

The Great Pyramid of Giza is the largest and arguably the most popular among the three Egyptian pyramids. It’s the last surviving member of the seven ancient wonders of the world, which carries great historical and architectural significance – an engineering feat that withstood the test of time. Apart from that, it’s also a notable religious site that celebrates the ancient Egyptian glorification of life after death. The pyramid houses the remains of Pharaoh Khufu, the first Egyptian king behind the construction of the pyramids of Giza. Admiring the staggering pyramids in person is truly an astonishing experience, but the elaborate complex also features temples and pyramids for the queens that you can explore.

The Great Sphinx of Giza

Another unmissable attraction in the ancient city of Giza is the Great Sphinx, a whopping 73-metre-tall limestone statue of a reclining sphinx – a mythical creature with a human head and a body of a lion. The massive monument directly faces the rising sun on the east and is famed as the world’s largest and oldest monolithic stone statue. The nose of the sculpture is missing but the reason is one of the mysteries that has yet to be solved. Carved perfectly on a solid block of limestone, the statue is surrounded with many myths and legends. It’s believed to represent Pharaoh Khafre, the second Egyptian king to build a pyramid in Giza. Another theory suggests that it was built to honour the ancient Egyptian god of sun, Ra.

Luxor Temple

Set on its namesake city, Luxor Temple is one of the most recognisable landmarks in the ancient Egyptian city. Luxor was formerly called Thebes – the classical capital of ancient Egypt – now transformed into a living museum that breathes history and old-world vibe. The glamorous temple is idyllically located on the east bank of the Nile River, offering scenic river views and a glimpse into the fascinating Egyptian culture and history! The site was host to several ceremonies and festivals, including military victory celebrations and crowning of pharaohs. Built on sandstone, Luxor Temple is characterised by open-air courtyards and  hypostyle halls decorated with towering columns and statues of Egyptian icons.

Valley of the Kings

This archeological site serves as the final resting place for many royal pharaohs who ruled during the New Kingdom era in ancient Egypt, including Tutankhamun, Amenhotep I, and Ramses II. UNESCO recognised Valley of the Kings as a World Heritage Site for being a prime example of ancient elite burial and memorial complexes. The necropolis offers visitors a chance to marvel at the ornately designed tombs of some of the most notable figures in Egyptian history – plus as an in-depth understanding of Egypt’s brilliant ancient civilisations. Apart from the elaborate tombs and hieroglyphs, you can also explore a myriad of temples, monuments and chapels dedicated to many gods and goddesses.

Karnak

Step back in time in one of the world’s largest and prominent Egyptian temple complexes – Karnak. The ancient religious site is primarily dedicated to Amun-Ra, the Egyptian god of sun, air and creation, but it also contains temples for other deities. A diverse mix of intricately-designed columns, iconic obelisks, monumental pylons, and age-old ruins welcome visitors to this vast temple complex – perfect for immersing yourself in the glory days of ancient Egypt. The site is not far from Luxor Temple and Valley of the Kings, making it an ideal addition to your ancient wonders of Egypt adventures!

Kom Ombo Temple

Kom Ombo Temple honours two Egyptian deities: Haroeris, the falcon-headed god, and Sobek, the crocodile god. Unique to other temple complexes in Egypt, Kom Ombo is the only one with a perfectly symmetrical layout – with two sets of rooms, sanctuaries, chapels and individual gateways. The extraordinary double temple stands next to the Nile River, so you can enjoy panoramic river views while immersing yourself in Egyptian culture and history. Taking a tour of the twin temple, you’ll find a double altar in the centre of the court dedicated to both gods. Outside the complex, you can drop by the Crocodile Museum, featuring an impressive collection of mummified crocodiles.

Abu Simbel Temples

Carved into the cliffs, Abu Simbel is one of the must-visit ancient wonders of Egypt – a historic site enveloped in endless mysteries and magic. The temple complex greets visitors with four gigantic statues of Ramses the Great at the entrance, inviting guests on an epic journey into the past as they pass through a striking array of intricate carvings, inscriptions and statues. Every October 22nd and February 22nd, the temple complex experiences a rare solar alignment – where sun rays slip into the sanctuary and illuminate the temple’s inner sanctum and the sculptures – creating a truly magical sight that will leave you in awe!

Philae Temples

Looking for a unique temple-hopping experience? Philae is an island-based temple complex in the Nile River between the old Aswan Dam and the Aswan High Dam. Tucked away on an island of Nile, the temple complex is surrounded by turquoise river waters – adding to its scenic and tranquil charm! It’s accessible via a short boat ride from the quaint city of Aswan. This remarkable site is dedicated to Isis – the goddess of healing, birth, and magic – as well as her husband and son. The UNESCO World Heritage Site has been relocated to higher ground on nearby Agilkia Island to protect it from the peril of submerging in flood water.
