South Korea Cruises

South Korea

South Korea is known for its groundbreaking technology, intriguing history and a globally influential pop culture. On a South Korea cruise, you’ll get to taste the fast-paced city life of Seoul, the vibrant metropolis that make a perfect destination for a pre-cruise stay. Seek blessings in the temples in Busan and hear the local’s famous satoori, a regional dialect with a distinct accent and intonation. And if you’re after golden beaches and remote tranquillity – there’s no better place than Jeju Island, the largest island in the Korean peninsula surrounded by volcanic rock formations and winding coastal trails.

Seoul, the country’s bustling capital, is where the fascinating past meets with the present-day glory. Take a tour of the five Grand Palaces, including the tourist-famous Gyeongbokgung Palace, Changdeokgung and Deoksugung. Climb the N Seoul Tower for uninterrupted city views, discover the traditional houses in Bukchon Hanok Village and satisfy your shopping needs in Myeongdong. When your ship calls at Busan, hit the Haeundae Beach – an urban beach set against the backdrop of skyscrapers. Snap a photo with Busan Tower and explore the Haedong Yonggung Temple overlooking the ocean. What’s a cruise holiday to South Korea without visiting Jeju? Catch the sunrise at Seongsan Peak, watch the haenyos (Jeju female divers) dive without oxygen masks and get the sense of fulfilment once you reach the summit of the country’s highest mountain – Mount Hallasan!

South Korea Cruise Highlights

Gyeongbokgung Palace, Seoul

Gyeongbokgung Palace is the main royal palace of the Joseon Dynasty and the largest and most ornate among the five grand palaces. The historic palace is known for its remarkable pagoda-style architecture and scenic mountainous backdrop. Explore the royal residence and drop by the former king’s living quarters and the main throne hall. You can also rent a hanbok, a traditional Korean clothing in vibrant colours, to further immerse yourself in the country’s rich culture and storied past. Complete your historic tour by witnessing the ceremonial changing of the royal guard at the palace gates!

Haedong Yonggung Temple, Busan

A rare find along the stunning shoreline, Haedong Yonggung Temple is definitely one the must-visit places in Busan! This Buddhist temple is idyllically perched on a cliff facing toward the sea, making it a popular point of interest for pilgrims seeking for spiritual intervention and tourists looking for an excellent sightseeing experience. This seaside temple is also close to the urban Haeundae Beach, so you can enjoy the blue waters up close after a day of exploring the temple.

Jeongbang Waterfalls, Jeju

Jeju Island was formed from volcanic eruptions and is now home to majestic waterfalls and spectacular landscapes that will surely leave you in awe! Jeongbang Waterfalls is one of the three premier cascading falls in Jeju, along with Cheonjiyeon Falls and Cheonjeyeon Falls. It’s one-of-a-kind as it’s the only waterfall that plunges directly into the sea, with the steep cliffs and old pine trees surrounding the fall and creating an even more picture-perfect scenery!

History and Culture

History and Culture

South Korea is steeped with historical and cultural wonders worth exploring. And while these cultural and historical sites remain the core of the country’s traditions and tourism, the country has seen a substantial development in its technological industries simultaneous to constant cultural emergence. The Korean (Hallyu) wave, including exports like music, drama and entertainment, has taken the world by storm and has been a significant force to promote South Korean culture and tourism. Although the Korean influence on pop culture is continuously seeping into the global spectrum in a positive light, let’s take time to also appreciate South Korea’s local traditions and deeply-rooted past through these extraordinary experiences:

  • Step back in time in Bukchon Hanok Village – home to over 900 hanoks (traditional Korean houses) dating back to the Joseon Dynasty.
  • Witness the sky magically light up during the  annual Lotus Lantern Festival on the Buddha’s birthday at Sangwangsa Temple!
  • Catch the one-of-a-kind Jeju women diver show, where elderly female locals dive deep into the ocean water without any diving equipment to collect seafood.

Things to Do in South Korea

Ride the cable car at N Seoul Tower

Set on the Namsan Mountain, N Seoul Tower is a national landmark where the land meets the sky and the highest peak that offers panoramic vistas of the Seoul skyline. There are various ways to get to the top of the tower – riding the cable car is the most convenient and quickest way to do it. The Namsan Cable Car is an aerial tramway that transports passengers from the base of the Namsan Mountain to N Seoul Tower. Thos glass-enclosed ride runs for three minutes, providing passengers sweeping views of the downtown Seoul skyline and surrounding mountains.

Wander the winding streets of Gamcheon Culture Village

Busan captivates travellers with its kaleidoscopically colourful rows of brightly painted houses reminiscent of Brazil’s colourful favelas, even gaining monikers such as the ‘Santorini of the East’ and ‘Machu Picchu of Busan.’ The riot of colours is a feast for the eyes. The winding alleys and steep stairways, adorned by street art and quirky murals, add charm to the picturesque village. This rainbow neighbourhood has also been used as a filming location for famous Korean variety shows and TV dramas, including Running Man and Luca: The Beginning, so be sure to snap shots as a memento!

Hike up the Mount Halla

Mount Halla is the highest point in South Korea, rising at 1,960 metres above sea level in the centre of Jeju and features over 350 volcano-shaped peaks. With several hiking routes, you can trek up the peak and back in a day – making it a perfect short-trip excursion for adrenaline junkies and adventure seekers! This dormant volcano is Jeju’s crown jewel, introducing an extraordinary ecosystem that hosts a variety of vegetation and wildlife. The breathtaking views that greet you at the mountain’s summit make the trek all worth it!

Local Cuisine

Local Cuisine

South Korean cuisine is argued to be one of the healthiest in the world for its prominent use of natural and seasonal ingredients, such as tofu, vegetables and the all-natural kimchi (fermented Napa cabbage). Traditional Korean meals are commonly composed of the staple steam-cooked sticky rice, served alongside multiple side dishes called banchan, whose number increases with the formality of the meal. Here’s a glimpse of the dishes you should sample and and try:

  • Slurp the noodles of an instant ramyeon from a convenience store along Han River for a local experience – you can also pair it off with a bottle of soju (distilled alcoholic drink)!
  • Enjoy a bowl of bibimbap – mixed rice topped with  a variety of vegetables, slices of  meat, kimchi and egg, stirred together thoroughly before eating.
  • Grill local samgyeopsal, a type of Korean BBQ that uses savoury pork belly – best enjoyed when wrapped in lettuce with other vegetables!
