Scandinavia Cruises

Explore the Land of the Vikings

Scandinavia is a captivating corner in Northern Europe — home to some of the world’s most dramatic landscapes and vast fjords, fascinating Viking history, and spectacular natural displays! Comprising the countries of Sweden, Norway and Denmark, Scandinavian cruises offer an opportunity to get a glimpse of out-of-this-world sceneries and a rich tapestry of culture. Navigate your way through the majestic Norwegian Fjords, experience the magical Midnight Sun and Northern Lights and explore the picturesque cities and towns.

The Scandinavian Countries

Norway

Norway is a once in a lifetime destination, spoken of in quiet awe as one of the most stunning places in the world. Beauty and nature come head-to-head in an intense and unique way in the land of the glaciers. Flåm is a picture-perfect fairytale village, known for the Flåm Railway that transports passengers on a scenic journey past the thundering waterfalls and lush valleys. Discover the spiky peaks and quaint fishing villages in Lofoten Islands, a premier spot for bird-watching and chasing the northern lights. And, Oslo, the capital, is where you can get a taste of Scandinavian traditions and modern life!

Sweden

Sweden is a proud home to Europe’s first Green Capital, Stockholm — encompassing 14 islands connected by over 50 bridges. The island of Gamla Stan is arguably the capital’s most popular tourist attraction, giving you the opportunity to step into Sweden’s past, wandering through cobbled streets lined with old style houses, cafes, bookstores, and grand old Royal Palaces. If you’re looking for a down-to-earth atmosphere characterised by understated elegance, Gothenburg is the perfect place for you, where you’ll find world-class museums,  Dutch-style canals and leafy boulevards.

Denmark

Dubbed as one of the happiest countries in the world, Denmark is proud of its welcoming atmosphere and delightful attractions, making it truly a joyful place to visit. And in the capital, Copenhagen, you’re bound to know why bliss fills the air in Denmark. Where better to start when you’re getting off a cruise ship than in the harbour? Nyhavn is  where colourful buildings line the canal like something from a fairy tale. Tivoli Gardens is Denmark’s proud testament of entertainment, offering fun rides and unlimited enchantment. Immerse yourself in the local town life by the sea in Fredericia, filled with cosy pedestrian streets and shops galore.

History and Culture

History and Culture

Scandinavia is the Land of the Vikings, comprising modern-day Denmark, Norway and Sweden, but these three countries didn’t come into existence until the end of the Viking era. The region’s history and culture are heavily influenced by the Vikings, a group of notorious Scandinavian seafaring warriors raided, pirated, traded and settled throughout Europe — galvanised by their pursuit of discovery, conquest, and trade.

Discover the Viking heritage, folklore and stories in the museums and archaeological sites displaying preserved ships and artefacts that prove their remarkable craftsmanship. From language and art to social norms and values, the Viking legacy serves as the cornerstone of the modern Scandinavian identity. Visit the Vasa Maritime Museum in Stockholm, home to the well-preserved Vasa warship. Or see the Oseberg ship in Oslo, a burial vessel for two reputable women, showcasing the importance of women during the Viking era.

Scandinavia Cruise Highlights

Norwegian Fjords

A journey through the Norwegian Fjords is often in the bucket list of many travellers for its jaw-dropping beauty, ever-changing weather conditions and the wealth of experiences. These narrow ocean inlets cut into the landscapes of mighty sheer cliffs and rugged rock faces, created by massive glaciers retreating over thousands of years. Some of most famous fjords you can cruise through are the Geiranger Fjord, which inspired numerous films for its fairytale-like beauty, Sgnofjord, dubbed the ‘King of Fjords’ and Aurlandsfjord famous for scenic train rides and sightseeing galore!

Midnight Sun & Northern Lights

Be in awe of the natural phenomena gracing the skies when the never-setting Midnight Sun puts on its display during the summer months and marvel at the spellbinding flickering Northern Lights during the winter. Norway is known as the ‘Land of the Midnight Sun’ as the country sees the sun sit idly on the horizon for the whole day in summertime. Take a Midnight Sun cruise around the coast of Northern Norway, whisking you to the Lofoten Islands, Tromsø and more. These port destinations are perfect for basking in the endless days and photographing the perpetual golden hour. Meanwhile, the breathtaking Northern Lights can be seen throughout Swedish Lapland — a region in northernmost Sweden lying within the Arctic Circle or the “aurora zone.”

Quaint Cities & Towns

Scandinavia is swathed with the most beautiful cities, towns and villages in the world. Indulge yourself in Scandaniva’s laid-back lifestyle and the sense of “hygge” — a Norwegian and Danish word that encapsulates the feeling of cosiness and contentment. Stockholm reigns top of the list of the most postcard-perfect cities in Sweden, brimming with museums, verdant green spaces and a charming Old Town. Nicknamed the ‘Gateway to the Norwegian Fjords,’ Bergen is surrounded by staggering mountains and fjords. Denmark’s capital, Copenhagen, abounds with castles and palaces like Rosenborg Castle and Christiansborg Palace. It’s also steeped with fairytale-like wonder, evidenced by the iconic Little Mermaid statue and the Tivoli Gardens that inspired Disneyland.

Scandinavia Cruise FAQs

What is the best time of year for a Scandinavia cruise?

The cruise season for Scandinavia typically lasts from May to September. Generally, summer is the best time to visit the region for pleasant temperatures and a wider range of cruise choices, except if you’re chasing after the winter activities and the auroras.

Is a cruise a good way to see Scandinavia?

Cruising is an excellent and convenient way to explore the endless wonders of Scandinavia in one trip. One of the best ways to see the Norwegian Fjords and capture the Northern Lights is by sea. From the holiday lights on board to exploring Christmas markets on land, there's plenty of ways to enjoy your cruise both on sea and shore days.

When is the best time to see the Northern Lights?

Winter is the prime season for northern lights hunting and viewing, when the skies are darker and daylight is shorter. Anytime between the months of October and April provide ample aurora viewing opportunities. In Northern Europe, the long and dark nights happen between December and February, and some regions experience polar nights where the sun doesn’t rise at all, increasing the chance for northern lights sightings. Meanwhile, the best time of the day to catch a glimpse of this light display is during the night between 11 pm and 2 am.

When is the best time to go on a Norwegian Fjords cruise?

The peak season for a Norwegian Fjords cruise is during the summer between June and August. These are the months when the temperatures are most pleasant and the flora are the lushest. However, many travellers opt to go in late spring or early summer to escape the crowds and enjoy long days exploring the fjords.

What ports are included in a Scandinavia cruise?

Some of the most famous ports that Scandinavia cruises visit are the Scandinavian capitals: Stockholm in Sweden, Copenhagen in Denmark and Oslo in Norway.
