Mozambique Cruises

Mozambique

Adjacent to Madagascar, Mozambique is a country that’s often overlooked but boasts unspoilt natural glory and diverse ecology. This Southern Africa jewel is bordered by the Indian Ocean, so you can expect beautiful beaches and offshore marine parks along the extensive coastline. The fun never stops in the sun and sand in Mozambique! Adventure enthusiasts will also be thrilled with the incredible wildlife viewing opportunities on the vast landscapes and national parks, while history buffs can appreciate the country’s distinctly time-warped character…

Steeped with Portuguese colonial architecture, Maputo is an oasis for history buffs and culture vultures – complete with elegant architecture, wide European-style avenues and a breezy café culture. The capital is home to some of the country’s main attractions, such as Maputo Railway Station, Maputo Fortress and the Maputo Cathedral. Soak up the serenity in Pomene, a secluded and unexplored strip of land in the Pomene Bay of Mozambique. This hidden gem is part of the Pomene National Reserve and has preserved its authentic and wild beauty. From vast national parks and marine sanctuaries to warm shores and historical landmarks, a Mozambique cruise allows you to explore the beauty of the country in all its glory!

Mozambique Cruise Highlights

Maputo Railway Station

Maputo Railway Station is an iconic example of the Beaux-Arts architectural style, welcoming travellers with an imposing white and dark-green facade and a grand central drome. This railway station was also used as a filming set for Blood Diamond, starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Djimon Hounsou. There is a small open-air museum at the back of the station, where you can uncover the history of the station – something that avid train enthusiasts will love!

Bazaruto National Park

Set in the unspoilt land of Bazaruto National Park, the Bazaruto Archipelago comprises a cluster of remote islands, diverse coral reefs and critical marine habitats. Each of the islands has its own idiosyncrasies and individual charm, but all of them share the same beauty of having long stretches of the picture-perfect beaches. The largest island, Bazaruto, boasts high dunes and large lakes, while colourful reef systems provide home for the rare dugongs in Il ha Magaruque and Santa Carolina.

Pomene National Reserve

Pomene National Reserve is a tiny marine reserve that encompasses a sandy peninsula, sparkling lagoon and dense mangrove estuary. It makes a perfect spot for viewing water birds, mammals and nesting turtles. A paradise for divers and beachgoers, the fine sandy shores are beautifully flanked by towering palm trees. If you’re lucky, you’ll chance upon giant crabs in the estuary and spot whale sharks in the open waters from a safe distance.

Things to Do in Mozambique

Uncover the city’s storied past in Maputo Fortress

Maputo Fortress is a defensive stronghold built by the Portuguese that carries the capital’s military heritage, as well as narratives of cultural decolonization and political disputes. You’ll find a small museum inside the old fort, where you can learn about the turbulent past of the city during the Portuguese colonisation. Take a referring stroll and unwind with the greenery in the landscaped garden after exploring the area.

Immerse with the locals in Pomene Village

The most authentic way to immerse yourself in the local culture and lifestyle is to visit the Pomene Village – a small village filled with tiny huts made out of palm leaves. Electricity and Wi-Fi are not available here, so expect to completely unplug and disconnect from the world. You can opt to stay in the community lodge to directly help the host community raise funds. Wile the long afternoons away by playing football with the residents, learning their recipes or taking a refreshing dip in the unique Blowhole Beach!

Enjoy wildlife viewing in Gorongosa National Park

Safari enthusiasts will have a grand time having incredible wildlife encounters in Gorongosa National Park – which is referred to as the “Serengeti of the South”. This park’s floodplains, forests and savannas are home to elephants, buffalos, hippos, zebras and a variety of antelopes. You can also spot here the king of the jungle and one of the most powerful creatures on Earth – lions!

Mozambique Cruise FAQs

What are the best months to go to Mozambique?

The most ideal months to visit Mozambique are between May and November, when the weather is dry, the temperatures are cool and there’s less chance for rain. The wet season falls from December to April and January and February are the cyclone season, so you may want to avoid booking these months if you’re not fond of the rain.

What to pack for a cruise in Mozambique?

Cash, travel documents, clothing, footwear, hygiene kit, medications, travel-sized toiletries and digital devices (phone, camera, powerbank) are the essentials to pack on your cruise. Research about the season of your visit and bring suitable and comfortable clothes. Since you’ll likely do water sports like diving in Mozambique, it’ll be helpful to bring your own gear and equipment. Don’t worry, there are rentals on most sites in case you find it a hassle to pack your own!

What currency is used in Mozambique?

Mozambican metical is the official currency of Mozambique. South African Rand and US Dollars are also widely accepted by many local businesses and accommodation lodges, especially in the central and northern parts of the country. You can also use your credit cards at most high-end hotels, and ATMs are available in major cities.

Is Mozambique safe to visit?

Mozambique is generally a safe country to travel to. There are some parts that the government has advised against travel, but the cruise ports you’ll visit are considered safe. Besides petty and usual crimes, such as pickpocketing and muggings, Maputo and Pomene are safe for tourists as long as you follow the necessary precautions.

What vaccines are needed for Mozambique?

Be sure that routine vaccines and boosters are up to date as recommended by the World Health Organization, including flu vaccine, MMR, polio, measles, chickenpox etc. Other vaccines to consider are ones for Hepatitis A & B, typhoid, malaria and measles. You can further consult with your doctor to know which ones are necessary for your trip.
