Thailand

Welcome to the Land of Smiles – where locals greet you with a warm smile and Thai Wai (a courteous bow with the palms pressed together). Thailand is a tropical paradise with soft white sands and aqua blue waters, perfect for winter sun cruises and summer getaways! With an eclectic mix of verdant forests and vibrant metropolises, it’s a country where getting bored is not an option. History buffs and culture vultures will never be disappointed either, with a host of magnificent temples and a distinct uncolonized history encompassing this Southeast Asian gem.

Sail to Laem Chaebang, the gateway to the charming capital of Bangkok – known as the ‘Venice of the East’ for the many canals that form a web through its streets. From glittering temples that showcase architectural splendour to bright skyscrapers oozing high-end glamour, it’s easy to understand why Bangkok is a world-class city that lures many tourists around the world! Seeking to soak up sunshine? Phuket’s warm weather and stunning beaches invite you for a sunny holiday like no other! The sun-kissed island is also home to the 45-metre marble-crafted Big Buddha, offering a culturally refreshing break after your relaxing spell in the Far East sun. And if you’re looking to unwind in a place with remote serenity, head to Koh Samui – Thailand’s second largest island, steeped with natural beauty from palm-fringed beaches to dense, mountainous rainforests. Discover these wonders and more on a tantalising Thailand cruise!

Thailand Cruise Highlights

The Grand Palace, Bangkok

Set in the heart of Bangkok, The Grand Palace is a complex of buildings that once was the official residence to the Kings of Siam – the former name of Thailand. The complex also comprises halls, pavilions, temples, open lawns, gardens and courtyards – an exemplary example of an exquisite Royal architecture. The sacred Temple of the Emerald Buddha sits on the grounds of this majestic palace, claiming great fame and making it the main attraction. Inside the temple, you’ll find a carved figurine of the meditating Buddha on a grand multi-tiered pedestal. As the name suggests, it’s made from a solid piece of green jade, clothed in gold and diamonds.

The Big Buddha of Phuket

The Big Buddha in Chalong has to be your first stop for a cultural experience. It’s perched atop the Nakkerd Hills and standing proudly at 45 metres, making it one of the best viewpoints in the island. Thanks to its massive size and white-washed colour, you can admire the religious marble statue at a distance anywhere in the southern part of Phuket. A sweeping 94-step staircase will lead you up to the Big Buddha, but note that there’s a separate route for going down on the hillside. Whether you want to seek blessings or go sightseeing, this site is definitely a must-visit!

Chaweng Beach, Koh Samui

Soak up the sun with a cocktail and feel the upbeat beach vibe in Chaweng Beach – an elongated powdery sand stretch packed with beachfront bars and entertainment shows! Pop into the popular Ark Bar, serving mouthwatering barbecue and fresh seafood with live music. Besides the fantastic nightlife and dining scene, this beach area also offers great swimming and a plethora of water sports to enjoy during daylight, such as jet-skiing, catamaran cruising and kayaking.

History and Culture

History and Culture

Thailand prides itself on being the sole country in South and Southeast Asia that never succumbed to foreign colonisation during the 19th century, so its cultures remain authentic and intact. Although its former name Siam Kingdom received Western influences from the Thai kings’ sons  who studied in Western countries and Westerns coming to work on projects, contributing slight changes to the country’s contemporary character and architecture. Here are some ways to immerse yourself in Thai’s history and culture:

  • Visit the best temples in Bangkok to get an insight into the heritage and religion of Thailand's capital, including the Temple of the Dawn and Temple of Reclining Buddha.
  • Explore the lively Phuket Old Town, where streets are filled with brightly painted Sino-Portuguese townhouses, colourful shops, local markets, museums, mural paintings and street art – a perfect setting to learn about the island’s rich history.
  • Pamper yourself with a traditional Thai massage to alleviate muscle soreness and discomfort in your body – an essential cultural experience after a long day of sightseeing and adventure!

Things to Do

Escape the city buzz in Lumpini Park

Lumpini Park is pitched as an inner city haven and the “Central Park of Bangkok.” It’s home to water monitor lizards and an urban green space for city residents craving a breath of fresh air and people taking to the park to exercise. Rent a swan-shaped paddle boat and cruise on the serene artificial lake, take a stroll on the heart-shaped walking route or enjoy picnics on the well-manicured lawns. Escape the city rush and wander around the public park as you connect with nature without leaving the city centre!

Bask on the sun-drenched beaches of Phuket

Phuket is a renowned paradise for flip-flop-clad sun-seekers and selfie-shooting sand worshippers, thanks to its strategic location on the Andaman Sea. The island’s endless sunshine is its main claim of fame, with year-round sunny days and incredible beaches that keep travellers coming back for more. Kata Noi Beach is the perfect escape for tranquillity seekers who want to skip the crowds in the lively neighbouring Kata Beach. The palm-fringed Nai Harn Beach, set in a natural bay, is also popular among tourists with a slightly hippy atmosphere and Thai restaurants overlooking the calm sea.

Take a refreshing walk in the Secret Garden of Buddha

Situated at the top of Pom Mountain, one of the highest peaks on the island of Koh Samui, the Secret Garden of Buddha is a passion project created by a retired durian farmer who collected Buddha statues to curate his land property – where he can relax and meditate in solitude and also use as his last resting place. A long hike is required to get here, but the beauty and peace of the landscaped garden makes the effort worthwhile! You can wander around, admiring the statues and the small stream that flows through the garden.

Local Cuisine

Local Cuisine

Sampling Thai cuisine, from the street food sold by local hawkers to traditional home-cooked dishes, is one of the best cultural experiences in Thailand. Unlike its pristine history, Thai cuisine is a melting pot of various cultures, with influences from India, China and Portugal. If you’re looking for must-try food, here are a few of our recommendations:

  • Pad Thai (stir-fried noodles) is arguably the most popular signature dish of Thailand both locally and internationally, which is commonly served as a street food.
  • A full bowl of the savoury Tom Yum Goong (spicy shrimp soup) is a classic traditional Thai dish, suitable for spicy food enthusiasts and people who have high spice tolerance!
  • Som tum (green papaya salad) offers a perfect recipe for the health-conscious – countering Thai cuisine’s reputation for hearty, carb-driven meals.

Thailand Cruises FAQs

When is the best time to go on a Thailand cruise?

With its tropical climate, there’s no notable bad season when it comes to a Thailand cruise, although you might want to avoid the rainy season that runs from July to October. Generally, the high season is from November through March. However, the weather pattern is different for Koh Samui island and the Andaman Sea region. For the best weather, you can time your booking to Koh Samui between December and March , while the most ideal time to visit Phuket is normally from November through April.

What ports will the cruisers visit in Thailand?

Most ships call at Laem Chaebang, the largest port city in Thailand and the cruise port for Bangkok. Other port cities include Phuket and the island of Koh Samui.

What is the etiquette for temple visits in Thailand?

Thailand is steeped with temples and there are some etiquettes for temple visits that tourists must observe to respect its sacredness. Dressing modestly and removing shoes when entering the temple grounds are two of the golden rules that must be strictly followed. Once you’re inside, always observe silence to not disturb the worship and refrain from touching the religious figures and art on the walls. Most temples graciously allow photography, but avoid using flash and taking photos during ceremonies. Never forget to get permission and ask for consent before you do something.

What is the official currency used in Thailand?

Thailand’s official currency is the Thai Baht. Although debit and credit cards are widely accepted in some touristy establishments, it's important to note that Thailand is very cash-oriented, so be sure to carry cash wherever you go. There are many ATMs across Thailand, from the airport and hotel to malls and convenience stores, so it’s easy and convenient to withdraw cash.

What language does Thailand speak?

Thailand’s official language is Thai, but English is widely spoken across the country. You can communicate with the locals in English, but it will be useful to learn a few Thai words and phrases to help you enrich your experience and be able to navigate the country more easily.
