Papua New Guinea Cruises

Go Off the Beaten Path

Set sail on a world of discovery on board a Papua New Guinea cruise, taking you to some of the most picturesque ports in the South Pacific. Branded as “a million different journeys,” every trip to this beautiful country in Oceania offers endless ways to thrill and chill. From postcard-perfect beaches down below into the colourful coral reefs up above to the traditional tribal villages, you’ll never run out of things to do and sights to see here!

Port Moresby is the country’s sprawling capital and the gateway to its many wonderful offerings. Discover the vast anthropological collection in the PNG National Museum, meet diverse wildlife at Port Moresby Nature Park and watch the sun dip into the ocean by the Ela Beach. When you’re on a cruise, ships call at Alotau — the main port and sleepy town situated on the right tip of Papua New Guinea’s main island. Learn about the Milne Bay Battle or experience the local life in the traditional villages. Although rather contrasting, a peaceful holiday awaits in the Conflict Group, hosting 21 untouched islands to leave you in awe…

Papua New Guinea Cruise Highlights

Milne Bay

Milne Bay is a large bay in Milne Bay Province, wrapped up in rich natural and historical heritage. From the shore to the bottom of the sea, there’s a plethora of activities to keep you entertained and relaxed! History buffs can gain a deeper understanding about the infamous Milne Bay Battle with the evidence of planes, tanks, ships and ammunition left on the sheltered harbour. Don your diving suit and go underwater to see the abundant marine life, shallow coral gardens and World II wrecks that lie beneath the bay waters.

Ela Beach

Sunsets are especially glorious at Ela Beach — a public beach stretching along Port Moresby. This beach features a scenic promenade, perfect for taking a leisurely walk and soaking up the cool afternoon breeze! Besides the family beach, it boasts a playground, sports facilities and a recreational park area, where you can while away the time. You can also browse through the weekly markets, including the Ela Beach Craft Market, and pick up some handcrafted crafts and ornaments to take home!

Port Moresby Nature Park

Spot the famous blue-winged kookaburra, along with the different species of bird, at Port Moresby Nature Park. A haven for wildlife and plants enthusiasts, this park is home to over 550 native animal species and diverse flora hidden in the tropical gardens or clinging on the tree branches. Spot the adorable tree kangaroos, listen to the parrots talk and be wowed by the flightless cassowaries as you take a stroll around the serene rainforest. Be sure to watch the cultural demonstrations too for an immersive experience.

Things to Do in Papua New Guinea

Soak up serenity in the Conflict Islands

Welcome to paradise! Conflict Group is a cluster of 21 untouched islands, most are uninhabited, making it an idyllic retreat from the bustling city life. The name ‘Conflict’ was derived from the name of the HMS naval survey ship ‘The Conflict.’ Whilst the name can be deceiving, this call is a peaceful paradise where you can enjoy the peace and quiet. Many of the islands are cloaked in lush greenery, providing a safe habitat for tree kangaroos and bird species. And as you laze on the golden shores, let the sun gently touch your face as you confide in its warmth and feel the sand on your toes!

Explore the quaint town of Alotau

Alotau is the main cruise port in Papua New Guinea, welcoming visitors with fascinating culture and natural beauty. See the impressive war canoe exhibits, giving you an insight into the triumphant Milne Bay Battle — from the military blunders to the first significant defeat of the Japanese forces that boosted the morale of allies and debunked the myth of Japanese invincibility during that time. Don't miss out on experiencing Alotau’s village life as you observe the Tawala traditions that have been kept alive throughout the years and sample the local specialities!

Visit Hanuabada Still Village

Lying on the outskirts of Port Moresby is Hanuabada — a charming coastal settlement suspended over the sea on stilts. This original Motu village is an excellent place to learn about the indigenous Motu’s way of life, local culture and traditional Motu customs. It’s the oldest and the largest of the remaining stilt villages in Papua New Guinea. The original wood and thatch houses were razed to the ground by fire during the second world war, the village has been restored in all-Australian construction materials.
