Malaysia

Malaysia offers an astonishing mix of natural landscapes, colourful cultures, tantalising cuisine and modern capital cityscape! This Southeast Asian gem is not only known for its vibrant capital and cultural heritage but also for its breathtaking coastline, wrapped in tropical beaches and lush rainforests. On a Malaysian cruise, you’ll set sail to some of the world’s most fascinating port cities and islands, including Kuala Lumpur, Kota Kinabalu, Penang and Langkawi Island.

A Malaysian cruise will take you to the country’s vibrant capital, Kuala Lumpur, with a modern skyline dominated by the Petronas Twin Towers, and dotted with British colonial-era landmarks, such as the historic Kuala Lumpur Railway Station and the 19th-century Sultan Abdul Samad Building. And if you’re up for a quick day trip to a nearby suburb, head to Batu Caves and admire the limestone cliffs studded with caves and carved cave temples. The leading port of Malaysia, George Town, is the gateway to the Malaysian island of Penang and is fondly coined as the country’s food hub. Fancy a trip to an archipelago with sublime natural scenery and landscapes? Go on an idyllic island-hopping experience across Langkawi, a cluster of 99 islands, boasting tropical climates, pearl white sand beaches and extraordinary wildlife. From Peninsular Malaysia, cruise to the island of Borneo to reach the coastal charmer Kota Kinabalu that offers sightseers a diversity of cultures and eras…

Malaysia Cruise Highlights

Petronas Twin Towers

Colloquially coined the KLCC Twin Towers, Petronas Towers rises at 451-metre height in the capital’s city centre and prides itself on being the world’s tallest twin towers. The 88-storey twin structure highlights a postmodern-style and avante-garde architecture and is heavily inspired by the former Malaysian prime minister’s vision for Malaysia to be a global player. The main claim of fame of this iconic skyscraper is the skywalk over the sky bridge that links the towers together – perfect for viewing the vibrant cityscape and the urban KLCC Park.

Langkawi Sky Bridge

Langkawi Sky Bridge is a 125-metre-long curved pedestrian cable-stayed bridge overlooking the dramatic peaks of Gunung Mat Cincang, the Telaga Tujuh waterfalls and the neighbouring islands of Langkawi. The pedestrian bridge is perched at 660 metres above sea level and is accessible via the SkyCab  cable car. An engineering feat, this suspended bridge deck swings out over Langkawi’s second-tallest mountain, Gunung Machinchang – making it the highest free-standing bridge in Southeast Asia and one of the curved suspension bridges in the world!

George Town

George Town is the multicultural capital of Penang. Wander the city’s steep alleyways and side streets and you’ll catch sight of an abundance of incredible artistry, illustrations, graphics and murals. The cosmopolitan city is also steeped with colonial-era architecture, as well as little corners that highlight foreign cultures. You’ll also find an Armenian street lined with old boutique shops and cosy cafes; Little India, which is the city’s cultural centre awash with street food stalls and restaurants; and Chinatown hosting a lovely mix of clan houses, souvenir stalls and tea houses.

History and Culture

History and Culture

A melting pot of culture, Malaysia is home to a kaleidoscope of diverse cultures attributed to its rich indigenous history blended with foreign influences through years of colonisation. The Malay culture is heavily influenced by the Chinese, Indian, Portuguese and British – all intertwined to make up one of the most interesting combinations of cultures and traditions in the world. You’ll find four UNESCO World Heritage Sites, as well as Buddhist temples and Hindu shrines. If you want to glimpse at Malaysia’s culture and history in all its glory, check out these notable points of interest:

  • Melaka and George Town – these two colonial cities of the Straits of Malacca highlight multicultural heritage and were jointly inscribed on the World Heritage List.
  • Mari Mari Cultural Village is a themed local village showcasing the way of life of native Sabahan tribes – it’s tucked away in a remote forest in a Kota Kinabalu suburb, away from the hustle and bustle!
  • Golden Triangle is the perfect place to experience the modern buzz and bliss in Kuala Lumpur – this bustling district is where commercial, shopping and entertainment areas converge.

Things to Do In Malaysia

Take off to the skies on the Langkawi Cable Car

The Langkawi cable car transports passengers on a 15-minute magical ride to the top of Gunung Machinchang – providing panoramic views of the archipelago’s verdant rainforests, cascading waterfalls, nearby islets and even partial views of Southern Thailand. The journey embarks from Oriental Village and goes all the way to 708 metre-tall peak, where you can walk the sky bridge, soak in the cool breeze and browse through the souvenir stores.

Sample authentic Malaysian staple food in George Town

Dubbed the food capital of Malaysia, George Town boasts a dynamic and ubiquitous street food scene with laksa and curry noodles as standout dishes! You can also drop by the traditional hawker markets – these are al fresco food courts dotted with communal tables and vendor stalls offering a wide variety of affordable delicacies. Some hawker markets you can visit are the CF Food Court, the largest in the area, New Lane Hawker Centre, located along a busy road, and Red Garden Food Paradise, a haven for food enthusiasts seeking to satisfy their senses with good food and music.

Hike the summit of Malaysia’s tallest mountain

Adrenaline junkies who need a bit of thrill and excitement can climb the peak of Mount Kinabalu – the tallest mountain in the Malay archipelago, sitting in the Crocker Mountain Range and lying within the sprawling Kinabalu Park, which is recognized as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. The trek to the summit can be challenging, making it ideal for experienced hikers and must be accompanied by a licensed guide at all times. The stunning views of the Sabah region once you reach the summit make the strenuous trek more than worth it!

Local Cuisine

Local Cuisine

Malaysian cuisine is an explosive fusion of Chinese, Indian, Malay and indigenous influences. If you’re into Indonesian and Singaporean dishes, it’s highly likely that you’ll be drawn to Malaysian food as these neighbouring countries are also inclined into using diversity and bold flavours. Penang has gained a reputation as the food capital of Malaysia, boasting a myriad of street delicacies, hawker stalls and rowdy kopitiams. Many local restaurants have been serving their ancestor’s gastronomical delights for centuries now. If you’re a foodie looking to tantalise your taste buds, Malaysian food will definitely keep you wanting to come back…

  • Nasi Lemak is Malaysia’s unofficial national dish, in which rice is cooked in coconut milk and plated with a variety of side dishes including egg, veggies, sambal (chilli-based sauce) and more!
  • Penang is popular for Assam Laksa –  thick rice noodles swamped in a sweet and sour fish sauce as the soup base, all with a touch of sourness from tamarind juice!
  • Roti Canai is a flatbread snack with deep Indian origins, served plain with curry dip – the best way to sample this snack is in the street stalls as you watch the vendors roll out the dough!
