Montenegro Cruises

Explore the Adriatic gem

A Montenegro cruise whisks travellers away into a world of beauty and enchantment. Rugged mountains, mediaeval villages and a strip of beaches lining the Adriatic Sea – name it and Montenegro has it all! Despite being one of the smallest countries in Europe and the tiniest fully recognised Balkan country, Montenegro doesn’t fall short of phenomenal natural diversity and rich turbulent history, with top-notch gastronomy and pleasant sunny weather to add to its lustre.

This Adriatic gem is home to Europe’s deepest canyon and the world’s second next to the Grand Canyon – the Tara River Canyon. Drifting through the Tara River, also called the Tears of Europe Rapids, is a quintessential experience for adrenaline junkies. Where the Bay of Kotor meets the Adriatic Sea lies a fortified town named Kotor, the gateway port of Montenegro cruises. Once you enter the Sea Gate to the Old Town, meander through the winding streets and you’ll come upon several Romanesque churches, charming boutiques and historical monuments within the walls. If you’re feeling a little more adventurous, hike to the hilltop fortress and catch breathtaking views of the Bay of Kotor and the ancient town from above. A Kotor Bay boat trip will transport you to a nearby island, Our Lady of the Rocks, steeped with fascinating stories and legends!

Montenegro Cruise Highlights

Kotor Old Town

Idyllically positioned directly in front of the port, the historic Sea Gate welcomes travellers at the entrance of the fortified city of Kotor. Entering the Old Town feels like stepping back in time, with a maze of narrow, cobblestone streets and mediaeval architecture that echo the town’s storied past. Grab a bite of squid ink risotto in the restaurant in the main square, buy local goods in the farmer’s market, get a cup of coffee in a charming al fresco cafe and marvel at the emblematic clock tower - do all these without the stress of traffic and honks inside the vehicle-free ancient town.

St. Tryphon Cathedral

St. Tryphon Cathedral is a Roman Catholic church consecrated in 1116 and reconstructed after several earthquakes. Arguably the most beautiful building in Kotor and a notable symbol of Christian faith, Kotor Cathedral is a double-towered ornate cathedral that has undergone many renovations and alterations in an effort to keep it intact and erected. It has an architecture reminiscent of a southern Italian style with Romanesque interior design, Corinthian columns and Baroque bell towers.

Our Lady of the Rocks and St. George

There are two islands sitting in the inner part of Bay of Kotor - one man-made and one natural. Our Lady of the Rocks is a spectacular artificial island boasting a blue-domed Roman Catholic church and a museum  with an orange  rooftop. Dubbed as a sailor’s sanctuary for over four centuries, legends have it that seafarers built the island after the icon of the miraculous Virgin Mary that appeared before them on a rock where the island currently lies manifested her healing powers. Meanwhile, the adjacent St. George houses a Benedictine monastery shaded by cypresses and an expansive cemetery. It’s currently off limits to tourists but a boat trip allows you to admire the island from a distance at the sea without stepping foot on the territory.

Things to Do in Montenegro

Climb up the Kotor Fortress

Kotor Fortress, also called the St. John Fortress, is a historical fortification system that once protected the mediaeval Kotor with citadels, forts, towers, and walls leading all the way up to the summit of the mountain where the Castle of San Giovanni lies. This iconic hilltop castle-like structure embraces a rich past that can be traced back to the era of the Byzantine Empire. There are two hiking trails you can take to reach the fortress - one that follows the walls of Kotor and the other is the Kotor Ladder. Regardless of what path you choose, the breathtaking views of the ancient city and the Bay of Kotor will make the hike more than worthwhile!

Enjoy a fun day in the sun in Kotor Beach

Although Kotor isn’t exactly known for sandy beaches, it does have a stretch of pebbled urban beach backed by spectacular scenery at every turn. It’s only a short walk from the cruise port and the old town. There’s a cordoned off area designated for swimming to protect people from boats and cruise ships. The beach is set against a backdrop of towering limestone hills, whilst in front are the emerald waters of Kotor Bay. You’ll find a large outdoor pool towards the southern end of the beach, perfect for wading in the waters in case you prefer shallower and calmer waters.

Take a walking tour to Kotor’s historic churches

Kotor is home to a surprising number of churches reflecting the town’s fascinating culture, history and architecture. While here, take the time to join a walking tour through the Orthodox and Catholic churches spread across the town. St. Tryphon Cathedral is a proud testament of Roman Catholicism, considered one of the most renowned churches for its impressive architecture, whilst the church of St. Nicholas is a Baroque-style structure dedicated to Orthodoxy. Other important churches you can include in your tour are St. Luke’s Church, St. Mary’s Church, St. Anne’s Church and St. Michael’s Church.
