St. Kitts and Nevis is an exquisite dual-island nation lying between the Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean Sea. St. Kitts is the larger one and is known as the more ‘outgoing’ sister with black-sand beaches and endless thrilling adventures, making it one of our bucket-list-worthy Caribbean islands! Meanwhile, Nevis has coral-fringed silver beaches and a laid-back atmosphere. So, what better way to spend a Caribbean holiday than experiencing the contrasting charm and magic of these twin islands for your next holiday?
Whether it’s climbing the mountain top, taking a scenic and relaxing train ride or exploring the underwater world — there’s something for every kind of traveller in St. Kitts. Learn about Kitian history in the UNESCO-listed Brimstone Hill Fortress National Park, hike to the summit of Mount Liamuiga and enjoy tee time at the Royal St. Kitts Golf Club. If you’re looking to unwind and soak up some sunshine, head to Nevis’ powdery-sand Pinney’s Beach or sip a sundowner margarita at a beach bar in Oualie Beach!
The best place to start uncovering Kitian history is at Brimstone Hill Fortress and National Park, where you’ll find an old military fort, moat and cannons. This 38-acre historic site is recognised by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site for being a paragon of a well-preserved colonial architecture. Perched on a hill, it serves as a panoramic vista overlooking the island and the Caribbean Sea, and on a clear day, you can see right out to Nevis, Montserrat, Saba and beyond!
Pinney’s Beach is arguably the most popular beach in Nevis — where all the action happens and the closest beach to Charlestown. It’s famous for its saffron-hued sandy shores lapped by gentle waves and lined with casual dining areas. Although it’s the busiest beach on the island, it makes a perfect escape from the bustling crowds in St Kitts’ beaches, letting guests enjoy remote tranquillity and a slow-paced holiday without compromising the authentic Caribbean feel and warm weather.
St Kitts and Nevis offers more not just beautiful beaches but also natural landscapes owing to its volcanic roots, and the prime example of this is Mount Liamuiga — a dormant stratovolcano soaring at nearly 4,000 feet and home to a forested crater lake and lush vegetation. It’s an excellent hiking destination in the Caribbean with trails winding through verdant greenery. Get the chance to spot abundant flora and fauna, such as tropical flowers and vervet monkeys, along the way.
One of the most unmissable experiences in St Kitts is boarding the historic double-decker train that circumnavigates the island’s coastline on routes that once transported sugar cane from the plantations to the mills. The alfresco top-deck opens out to breathtaking views and great photo opportunities. This scenic railway was built in the 1900s and winds through the island’s mountains, giving passengers a scenic and refreshing break from the blazing sun and strenuous outdoor activities.
Seeking to taste local specialties and find handcrafts? Nevis Artisan Village is a one-stop shop for everything local. The area is just a few steps away from Pinney's Beach and up the street from the capital’s centre. You’ll find colourful boutique stores and numerous craft vendors on the site, selling a variety of items, including locally made soap, paintings, wood carvings, weaved baskets, jewellery and more! The expanded venue now hosts a cafeteria, resting gazebo and an entertainment stage band-stand.
Tracing the wonders below the waves of Frigan Bay, you’ll stumble upon diverse marine life, including sting rays, Hawksbill turtles and reef sharks. Windsurfing, kayaking and jet skiing are the other water sports to keep your adrenaline pumping besides snorkelling. When you’re not chasing adventure on the waters, hit the energetic beach bars and shacks for some fresh seafood and sip rum cocktails by the beach. Chill with some live music and local Caribbean drinks once the night falls to cap off an action-packed day.
The cruise lines that offer Eastern Caribbean cruises that call at St Kitts and Nevis, dropping passengers off in the capital city of Basseterre, are the Royal Caribbean International, Celebrity Cruises, Norwegian Cruise Line, Carnival Cruise Line, Princess Cruises and more.
The peak season for St Kitts and Nevis is between December and April, with the best times in January and February to get away from the wet winter weather.
The local currency in St Kitts is the Eastern Caribbean Dollar. US Dollars and major credit cards are also accepted in select business and taxi cabs.
Most cruise lines call at Basseterre, the capital of St Kitts, so you’ll likely to spend more time here once your ship docks. St Kitts is full of life and action, so you’ll have plenty of bucket-list experiences and must-see tourist spots here. Meanwhile, if you want a more relaxed and peaceful holiday, Nevis is the right place to be, offering calm beaches and quaint villages to taste the local life.
