Things to Do in Costa Rica

Enjoy wildlife viewing

Costa Rica is a top destination for spectacular wildlife viewing. It’s home to an extraordinary biodiversity – from native scarlet macaws, extinct green macaws and toucans to capuchin monkeys and adorable sloths clinging on the trees of national parks! Set in Puntarenas, Manuel Antonio National Park is one of Costa Rica’s most intimate protected  green spaces with nature trails and hiking paths, where you can observe rare birds, camouflaged iguanas, as well as furry creatures including sloths and monkeys. The protected wilderness in Puerto Limon, Tortuguero National Park, is a renowned nesting ground for sea turtles, including the critically endangered green turtles.

Hit a Costa Rican beach

Tropical sunshine and turquoise waters galore, Costa Rica boasts miles of pristine beaches – from sheltered sandy bays to towering beach waves. Playa Hermosa de Jaco is one of the most popular beaches in the country, offering the best waves for a thrilling surf adventure. For a more secluded and serene atmosphere, Playa Minas is a hidden gem in Guanacaste perfect for relaxing and unwinding by a hammock and Puerto Caldera features a long stretch of sandy shores for witnessing scenic sunsets! Idyllically located high above the famed Manuel Antonio National Park, Playa Manuel Antonio offers endless water activities and is backed by lush forests – so you can reconnect with nature while soaking up some sun!

Explore the picturesque port of Puntarenas

Set sail to the port town of Puntarenas in Costa Rica, where dramatic natural landscapes and the stunning Pacific coastline meet. Translated into English as ‘Sand Point,’ be  sure to make the most of its blissful stretch of beaches and lovely islands. The quaint port town is one of the cruise gateways to Costa Rica, rich in volcanic terrain and rainforest valleys that serve as habitat to diverse bird species and rare orchids. For history buffs, visit the Historical Maritime Museum of Puntarenas, showcasing pre-Columbian artefacts, natural resources, and other notable collections!

Take a nature break

Situated along a small inlet of Golfo Dulce on the southernmost part of Costa Rica, Golfito offers a peaceful escape from the daily hustle and bustle. The small port town packs a punch of scenic trails, vibrant wildlife and marine life, and tropical evergreen rainforests. Follow a trail through the densely forested Golfito National Wildlife Refuge to observe rare flora and fauna, discover the underwater world and spot a sea turtle, or climb a scenic outlook to enjoy panoramic ocean views. Golfito’s charm goes beyond its natural beauty, with its rich local culture and history to discover. Take the time to visit a coffee plantation, relive its history as a bustling banana port town or immerse yourself with the indigenous communities.

Sample the delectable national dish Gallo Pinto

Gallo Pinto, the national dish of Costa Rica and Nicaragua, is usually consumed for breakfast. The staple dish consists of rice and beans as base, traditionally mixed with sliced vegetables and paired with scrambled or fried egg. Gallo Pinto directly translates to ‘spotted rooster’ in English for its distinct speckled appearance of black beans against white rice. The seasoning of Salsa Lizano, a sweet-tangy vegetable-based local sauce, enriches its flavour and adds a nice finish! Embark on a culinary journey in Costa Rica, where you’ll be introduced to plenty of delectable dishes, such as ceviche, empanadas and tamales!

When is the best time for a Costa Rica cruise?

Generally, the high season for a Costa Rica cruise is during the dry period, which usually runs between December and April. This season offers the best weather and convenient travelling conditions – perfect for wildlife viewing, basking on the beach and outdoor adventures. If you want to avoid the large crowds, you can schedule your holiday during the rainy season, from May to November.
