Uruguay Cruises

Sail away to Uruguay

Looking for a hidden gem in South America? Uruguay is one of the continent's best-kept secrets! Although often  glossed over in the shadows of the more popular and much-bigger neighbours like Argentina, Brazil  and Chile, Uruguay will surprise you with its distinct charm characterised by stunning colonial architecture, white-sand Atlantic beaches and rugged landscapes. In southwestern Uruguay near Buenos Aires lies the quaint city of Colonia del Sacramento, known for its UNESCO-listed historic quarter and striking 19th-century lighthouse.

On a cruise to Uruguay, Montevideo and Punta Del Este serve as the major ports for many cruise lines. Montevideo, the capital of Uruguay, is an eclectic city – complete with its iconic “Rambla”, the world’s longest waterfront sidewalk. Punta Del Este is a big, luxurious city, spanning the Atlantic coast – nicknamed the “Saint-Tropez of Latin America” and “The Monaco of the South” for its coastal beauty and upscale vibe!

Things to Do in Uruguay

Explore the quaint capital

Montevideo, recognised as a UNESCO City of Literature, is a paradise for bookworms and literary enthusiasts! The capital city also boasts a rich musical heritage and is dubbed the birthplace of tango alongside Buenos Aires, Argentina. Where the sidewalk never ends, Rambla is the longest boardwalk in the world spanning 14 miles along Rio de la Plata in Montevideo. The long promenade is steeped with waterfront restaurants, gorgeous beaches and a sunny Mediterranean vibe! Ciudad Vieja, the city’s Old Town, beckons history buffs and culture enthusiasts with its museums and centuries-old landmarks like the Solis Theatre and the Mercado del Puerto indoor market.

Step back in Colonia

Just a short 2-hour-ride away from Montevideo, Colonia del Sacramento is a historic walled city in the southwestern tip of Uruguay – oozing a nostalgic vibe of a place frozen in time. This captivating city offers an insight into its storied past under Portuguese rule. Barrio Histórico, its cobblestoned Old Town, is lined with colourful houses, local shops  and picturesque doorways. One of the most photographed sites in the district is the Calle de Los Suspiros or “Street of Sighs,” which carries a mysterious charm and different stories. The 19th-century lighthouse soaring above the city is a recognisable landmark, offering panoramic views of the river and beyond.

Bask in the sun in the Miami of the South

Pulsating parties and pristine beaches await at Punta del Este, a glitzy coastal destination in Uruguay nicknamed the “Miami of the South”. Sun-drenched sands and warm waters attract beachgoers for unlimited fun and lounging in the sun during the day. And when the sun sets, the city transforms into a lively party hub with  its glamorous nightlife scene! Beyond the beaches and nightlife, the city is also home to amazing museums and landmarks. For a change of scenery and vibe, head to the impressive La Mano – a modern hand sculpture located at the beginning of bustling Brava Beach!

Journey to the end of the road

See where the road ends in Uruguay at Faro de José Ignacio, an upscale resort town that was once a sleepy fishing village. It’s known as a lively extension of Punta del Este’s social scene, offering a more intimate and tranquil atmosphere! The small beach town is the perfect escape from the hustle and bustle in the popular Uruguay cities like Montevideo and Punta del Este. José Ignacio’s lighthouse is a star attraction in the city, overlooking the town and the sea beyond. While here, you can enjoy a leisurely stroll and browse through independent shops, hit the beautiful beaches and sample local wines!
