From dramatic landscapes and world-class beaches to imposing architecture and rich history, a Spain cruise boasts an amazing wealth of offerings, with boundless once-in-a-lifetime experiences waiting at every port of call. Spend a day lounging on the sun-drenched beaches along the Mediterranean, get lost in the atmospheric streets of the Old City in Barcelona, and catch a flamenco performance in one of the tablaos in Madrid.

Spain is home to a plethora of cruise ports welcoming travellers around the world, including Barcelona, Cartagena, Ibiza, Alicante, Almeria, Cádiz, Málaga, Valencia and more! A seafaring adventure to Spain will let you discover the intriguing maritime history in Cartagena, step back in time in the ancient port city of Cádiz, and explore the diverse museums and galleries in Málaga. You can also sample the authentic Spanish paella in Valencia and cap off your night with colourful cocktails in a vibrant Ibiza beach bar.

The crowned capital of Catalonia, Barcelona is famed for its fascinating local culture and world-renowned football team. Las Ramblas is an ideal starting point for any day out in the cosmopolitan capital, a vibrant tree-lined pedestrian boulevard where you can witness Barcelona’s action at its best. Spain Cruise Highlights

Sagrada Familia

This Roman Catholic minor basilica is both stunning inside and out and is a work in progress, despite construction beginning in 1882. It’s one of the famous masterpieces of Antoni Gaudi spread throughout Barcelona, which has been designated as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO for its sheer beauty and great cultural significance. Inside Gothic meets Art Nouveau in a kaleidoscope of colour and it’s definitely worth the queue to get in. While here, make sure you also take a stroll in Park Guell – it’s like being placed in a fairy tale with an English Garden feel.

Alhambra

Located west of Granada, Alhambra is a spectacular fortress complex that prides itself on being the last surviving palatine city (a royal territorial centre) of the Islamic Golden Age in Spain. It’s also the last remainder of the glorious Nasrid Dynasty, the last Islamic kingdom in Western Europe. UNESCO declared the palace as a World Heritage Site in 1984. Strategically perched on the Sabika hill, this palace makes a vantage spot to view the city of Granada and the brooding Sierra Nevada peaks beyond.

Guggenheim Museum Bilbao

The Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, designed by Canadian-American architect Frank Gehry, is an avant-garde museum showcasing modern contemporary art. The exterior design of this building is already an art in itself, characterised by an impressive symphony of shapes built using blocks of limestone and undulating sheets of titanium. Inside, you’ll find a dazzling collection of artworks from esteemed artists, such as Anselm Kiefer, Willem de Kooning, Mark Rothko, Richard Serra and Andy Warhol.

History and Culture

History and Culture

Spain is a country steeped with cultural heritage deeply rooted to its extraordinarily dynamic past. Besides its geographic location on the Iberian Peninsula, different waves of colonists and settlers have occupied and inhabited the mainland and the Balearic Islands, so it’s no doubt that Spain’s history and culture weave a vibrant tapestry that continue to lure history buffs and culture vultures around the world. These are some of the cultural experiences you cannot miss on your next Spain cruise:

  • Watch a native flamenco show, a UNESCO-recognized art form bursting with emotion and passion, expressed in music, song, and dance.

  • Join the festivities of La Tomatina, a food brawl festival held in the Valencian town of Buñol, where a bunch of overripe tomatoes are thrown in the streets.

  • For sports aficionados, catch the El Clásico - a legendary football match between two rival clubs FC Barcelona and Real Madrid.

Things To Do in Spain

Wander through Seville’s Old Town

Seville’s Old Town, Barrio Santa Cruz, is a quaint neighbourhood that serves as a Jewish quarter in the capital and largest city of the Spanish autonomous community of Andalusia and the province of Seville. This ancient quarter is home to some important sights, including the Royal Alcázar of Seville, the oldest operating royal palace in Europe, and the Giralda, the striking bell tower of Seville Cathedral, which is one of the world’s largest cathedrals. Climb up the bell tower to catch the uninterrupted views of the cityscape. Wandering through the narrow cobbled streets and alleys, you’ll find a heavy concentration of squares and historic monuments to delight your eyes and senses.

Discover the ruins of the Roman amphitheatre in Cartagena

The Roman ruins arguably tops the list of the must-see attractions in Cartagena. The centuries-old amphitheatre wasn’t discovered until 1988 beneath the cathedral built over it, which was destroyed during the Spanish Civil War. The old ruins have been impressively restored to its former glory, completed in 2003, and now hosts modern-day performances. History and culture enthusiasts will have a fantastic time re-discovering the port city’s storied past in the museum at the site displaying archeological excavations and materials about the development of Spanish architecture.

Go beach hopping in Ibiza

Ibiza is a magnificent jewel on the Mediterranean, about 100 miles off the coast of Spain. Besides its lively summer electronic dance music club scene, the island is famed for its shimmering beaches and crystal-clear waters, drawing thousands of sun seekers and revellers annually. Dozens of beaches await for every kind of activity, so you’ll be spoilt for choice! Benirrás Beach is known for its stunning sunsets and scenery; Cala Pada offers undeveloped and secluded beaches for those who want to avoid large crowds; and  Cala Llonga is perfect for adrenaline junkies who are after the thrilling water sports.

Local Cuisine

Local Cuisine

Spain’s geographic location surrounded by extensive waters plays an integral role in shaping its gastronomy - seafood significantly influencing its staple dishes. But there’s more to Spanish cuisine than the variety of sea creatures pulled onto Spanish shores. Spanish food is rich in flavour and taste, from hearty stews to light bites, so there’s always something to satisfy every palate. Here’s a glimpse into some of the top eats you should try when your ship lays anchor in Spain:

  • Tapas tastings is an unmissable experience in Spain - these are small portions of food consumed between or before meals with a drink, such as Aceitunas and Patatas Bravas

  • Paella is considered the national dish of Spain; originating from Valencia, this famous colourful rice dish is served as the main course.

  • Churros are a popular snack and dessert often dipped in hot melted chocolate for a sweet finish!

Spain Cruises FAQs

Which cruise lines go to Spain?

A great selection of cruises go to Spain since most of the major international cruise lines offer sailings to many Spanish ports, mostly embarking from Barcelona. This includes the Norwegian Cruise Line, Celebrity Cruises, MSC Cruises, Princess Cruises, Royal Caribbean International, Holland America Line plus more!

When is the best time for a Spain cruise?

Generally, the best time for a Mediterranean cruise  is between the months of April and October with the peak season being July to September. For Spain specifically, the prime months would be from April through October as well, as this is the period when the temperatures are warmer and the seas are calmer.

Where do cruises leave from Spain?

Spain has numerous ports of call from north to south where cruise ships dock. So, wherever you want to visit, it’s likely accessible by cruise. These ports include Alicante, Almeria, Bilbao, Barcelona, Cadiz, Cartagena, Ibiza, Mallorca, Malaga, Valencia and Vigo.

Can you walk to Barcelona from the cruise port?

Barcelona’s port is quite centrally located; it only takes roughly around 30 minutes to get to the city centre from the port. This puts the city in a great location to get to and from for either a day exploring or a pre/post cruise stay. However, it's a bit of a trek to walk from the port to the city. You can reach the city by train or shuttle bus, but it often involves changing, so taxis are recommended if you’re after a hassle-free transfer.

What is the currency used in Spain?

The official currency used in Spain is the euro just like in the other European Union's Member States. A tip for tourists when withdrawing currency at an ATM: choose to pay in euro to avoid paying more than you need to and get the best rates available.
