Alaska Cruises

Witness the Northern Lights in Alaska

Discover Alaska’s unspoiled, rugged wilderness and the captivating wildlife that call it home on an Alaskan cruise adventure. From snow-capped peaks, giant glaciers and azure sea waters to sprawling national parks and vast terrains, only an Alaskan cruise will let you experience the best of it all in one enchanting setting.

Glaciers make up about 5% of Alaska, with over 100,000 glaciers occupying the state. Seeing these colossal ice walls up close is an unmissable experience for visitors and locals alike –  watching as its pieces collapse and descend delicately into the sea. Alaska’s Inside Passage is one of the most magnificent routes in the world, packed with breathtaking sights and colourful culture. Nestled along the world-famous cruise route is Skagway, offering a glimpse of the glorious past of the Klondike Gold Rush in 1896. The course also passes through Ketchikan, which is the ancestral home of the indigenous Tlingit tribe – the artisans of the world’s most extensive collection of traditional totem poles. Complete your cruise experience by spotting Alaska’s thriving wildlife, including birds, whales, and bears, in Juneau.

Alaska Cruise Highlights

Juneau

Only accessible by ship or by plane, Alaska’s capital city Juneau gracefully blends frontier ruggedness with cosmopolitan flair. It is the only state capital in the world without road access, so you can enjoy its remote tranquillity and well-preserved beauty. This picturesque city is an excellent gateway to the Mendenhall Glacier, an immense river of ice measuring 1.5 miles in width and over 6 miles in length. Peaks of ice called nunataks push through the ice – the highest peak of Juneau’s Icefield is known as Devil’s Paw, straddling the Alaska-Canada border and standing at a height of 8,584 feet.

Denali National Park

This 6-million-acre National Park is only accessible by one ribbon of road and is home to North America’s highest mountain. You can camp, hike or join an escorted tour through the region or stay in one of it’s many lodges. This sprawling park has been offering tourists the chance to immerse themselves in the the quiet solitudes of the wilderness for over 100 years. Spot a variety of wildlife, such as grizzly bears, wolves, moose, caribou and Dall sheep as you explore the miles of unspoiled wilderness.

Icy Strait Point, Hoonah

Icy Strait Point is situated 22 miles southeast of the Glacier Bay National Park. This native-owned-and-operated port makes an idyllic spot to catch sight of eagles soaring through the skies or an elusive brown bear in its natural habitat. You’ll also have the chance to spot majestic humpback whales breaching the water, as their striking tails create crashing waves in the distance.

History and Culture

History and Culture

Alaska’s fascinating past has greatly influenced its present-day cultures and traditions. While the state is primarily known for its awe-inspiring natural landscapes, it also boasts a rich and deeply-rooted cultural and historical heritage. Formerly a region belonging to Russia, Alaska became the 49th state admitted to the union in 1959 and was later followed by Hawaii. Here are some of the historical and cultural experiences you can have in Alaska:

  • Immerse yourself in the interesting native culture, evident in the unique tribal dances of the indigenous people

  • See the symbolic display of totem poles that represent kinship and significant life events, such as birth, death, and marriage

  • Learn about the state’s Gold Rush legacy, which is believed to have shaped the Alaska that we know today.

Things to Do in Alaska

Get a glimpse of the Northern Lights

Alaska is blessed to be one of the best places on Earth to get a glimpse at the auroras. Aurora Borealis or Northern Lights is a spectacular natural phenomenon. This stunning display of lights sometimes appears in a faint green sparkle, dancing slowly on the horizon like a curtain in the wind. At other times, the skies shine in hues of pink with dark red fringes. And on very rare occasions, blue and purple colours dominate the winter night skies. While you can witness the magnificent light spectacle almost anywhere in the state, it's most visible in the interior and arctic regions.

Enjoy scenic cruising of the Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve

The Inside Passage stretches hundreds of miles and encompasses thousands of islands. One of the most notable highlights of this route is Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve. Enjoy cruising along the expansive protected area, covering 3.3 million acres of jagged coastlines, rugged mountains, vibrant glaciers, verdant rainforest, and deep sheltered fjords.

Discover the natural beauty of your surroundings by train

Journey at a leisurely pace by train while glancing at Alaska’s natural splendour through the windows. The Alaska Railroad connects many of Alaska's most popular destinations such as Anchorage, Talkeetna, Denali National Park and Fairbanks, taking you past picture-perfect sights that’ll surely treat your eyes! And if you’re looking to experience more natural glory via train, the awe-inspiring Rocky Mountaineer rail journey through the Canadian Rockies, is the perfect pre- or post-Alaskan cruise inclusion. The route winds through ever-changing landscapes, featuring dramatic canyons, high peaks, coastal rainforests, and glacier-topped mountain peaks.

Local Cuisine

Local Cuisine

Fresh seafood is plausibly the core of Alaskan cuisine, thanks to the vast body of water surrounding the state. Sample the finest catches, including salmon, king crabs, and oysters. The savoury salmon is cooked in different styles – grilled, baked, or smoked – while the mouth-watering crabs are often paired with creamy chowder for flavour.

While seafood is the state’s crowning glory, Alaska’s extensive daylight hours help nurture a field of wild berries, making for healthy and delicious desserts to conclude the dining course. The native Akutaq ice cream is a delectable meat-based dessert mixed with berries!

Alaska Cruise FAQs

What is the best month to go on an Alaska cruise?

The best time to go on an Alaska cruise depends on your purpose. If you’re coming to Alaska to witness the auroras, we recommend booking between August to April. If you’d prefer warmer weather, the summer season in Alaska is from mid-May to mid-September. The shoulder seasons, May and September, are perfect for those who wish to avoid larger crowds and want to view the dramatic spectacle of humpback whale migration.

Can you see the northern lights from a cruise ship in Alaska?

Yes. The Aurora season runs from late August through late April, but the best time to view the northern lights while cruising is September when there is less daylight and the skies are darker.

How long does an Alaska cruise take?

Commonly, most Alaskan cruises last a week to 10 days, and it’s just enough to cover both the cruise experience and shore excursions. One thing to note is that – Alaska is big and has so much more to offer, so you can also opt to extend your cruise holiday for a few more days and add a pre or post land tour. At LoveitBookit, our cruise specialists are equipped with the knowledge to help you extend your stay in Alaska with a land tour or Rocky Mountaineer experience.

What to wear in Alaska?

Most passengers dress casually since most cruise ships don’t require formal attire. Be sure to pack water-resistant clothing and warmer layers when you’re travelling during the winter to stay comfortable.
