Sam in Japan: My Top 5 Japan Recommendations!

Sam's Japan Travel Tips

Konnichiwa from Japan! The Land of the Rising Sun invites you to explore its rich cultural heritage, stunning cherry blossom landscapes, and unique blend of ancient traditions and modern innovations – savouring fresh sushi along the way!

The island country of Japan is best seen via cruise, allowing travellers to effortlessly explore several vibrant cities in one trip, from the convenience and comfort of a floating sanctuary. I was particularly impressed by how close the ports were to the destinations, allowing me to step off the ship and leisurely wander the streets like a local, without the need to rush.

So, let’s embark on this journey together and discover the wonders of Japan.

Meet the writer

Hi, I’m Sam, host of Cruise TV by LoveitBookit and Product Manager, dedicated to crafting captivating cruise escapes for our customers! My passion for cruising started at age 7, on my first family cruise, since then I have experienced over 50 ships and have visited some of the most incredible destinations in the world. Join me as I share my top 5 things to do in Japan, along with all my tips and tricks, fresh from a recent cherry blossom cruise escape.

1. Discover the Hidden Attractions & Cool Sights of Kyoto

Kyoto is an absolute must-visit on your cruise itinerary. As the imperial capital of Japan for over 1000 years, it’s the heart of traditional Japanese culture. Easily accessible via a short bullet train ride from the cruise ports of Osaka and Kobe, as you step off the train, you’ll immediately feel the city’s historic charm!

I Recommend Seeing:

  • Fushimi Inari Shrine - One of the most iconic Japanese landmarks, the Fushimi Inari Shrine is renowned for its thousands of red torii gates that create a mesmerising pathway up the forested slopes of Mount Inari. Walking through these gates, you’ll feel like you’ve stepped into another world, one steeped in spirituality and tranquillity.
  • Gion and Higashiyama Districts - These areas are the heart of traditional Kyoto, where you can witness geishas gliding through the narrow streets and discover beautifully preserved wooden machiya houses. Every corner holds a piece of history, and the atmosphere is so serene.
  • Kiyomizudera Temple - This UNESCO World Heritage site offers breath-taking views over Kyoto, especially during the cherry blossom season. The temple’s wooden stage, which juts out from the main hall, provides a perfect vantage point to admire the sea of pink blossoms that cover the surrounding hills.

2. Ride the Iconic Bullet Train

Travelling through Japan on the Shinkansen bullet train is an adventure in itself! The efficiency and speed of the Shinkansen make it incredibly easy to explore multiple cities during your cruise. The thrill of zooming past picturesque landscapes, such as Mt. Fuji, at speeds up to 200 mph is something you’ll never forget. It’s not just a mode of transportation but a quintessential part of the Japanese experience and I absolutely loved it!

My Top Tips:

  • Tickets and Convenience - You can purchase tickets on the day at any station, making spontaneous day trips a breeze. The trains are punctual to the second, and the journey is smooth and comfortable.
  • Extend Your Stay in Tokyo - I highly recommend extending your stay in Tokyo. The capital city serves as a perfect base for day trips to other top destinations like Yokohama, Kamakura, and Nikko. Each trip offers a unique slice of Japanese culture and history, easily reachable thanks to the Shinkansen. Our Cruise Specialists are happy to help with hotel stay extensions on 0203 393 1003.

3. Spend Time Exploring the Food Scene in Tokyo

For a foodie like me, Tokyo is a culinary paradise, and diving into its food scene was a must. From the delicate flavours of matcha in a traditional tea house, to the rich and savoury dishes in lively izakayas, every meal I enjoyed was a feast for the senses.

My Foodie Favourites:

  • Traditional Tea Ceremony - Experience the serenity of a traditional tea ceremony, where every movement is a work of art. It’s a peaceful moment that offers a deep appreciation for Japanese customs.
  • Local Izakayas (Japanese Pubs) - For a more casual dining experience, visit local izakayas. Here, you can try a variety of small dishes and drinks. My top tip is to try the creamy soy ramen – it’s a comforting bowl of flavours that will leave you craving more.
  • Tsukiji Market - The Tsukiji Outer Market is a bustling hub of food stalls and restaurants. The market opens at 5:00am and is the perfect place to enjoy the best seafood Tokyo has to offer.  I recommend arriving early for the freshest sushi breakfast or lunch.

4. Witness the Incredible Cherry Blossom

Japan’s cherry blossom season is a spectacular event that attracts visitors from around the world. The sight of Sakura trees in full bloom is nothing short of magical. The word ‘Hanami’ means “flower viewing” and is the Japanese traditional custom of enjoying the transient beauty of the cherry blossom.

The best time to witness Japan's cherry blossom season is typically late March to early April, varying slightly depending on the region and the specific timing of the blossoms' peak bloom.

Best Places For Blossom:

  • Kochi Castle - Among the many places to enjoy cherry blossoms, Kochi Castle stands out. The historic castle, surrounded by hundreds of blooming cherry trees, creates a picturesque and serene environment. The castle grounds are a perfect spot for a Hanami picnic, where you can relax under the blossoms and soak in the beauty, while tucking into local snacks.
  • Mount Fuji - Japan's iconic snow-capped Mount Fuji offers another post-card perfect place to view the blossoms! At Lake Kawaguchiko, admire the blooming cherry trees that line the shore and make it one of the most popular viewing spots in the Fuji Five Lakes region. You can even head up the striking Chureito Pagoda and look out across the pink treetops in the foreground of the mountain.

5. Wander the Vibrant Streets of Osaka

Osaka, Japan’s second-largest metropolitan area, offers a diverse range of attractions that cater to every interest. Exploring Osaka was a delightful contrast to the tranquillity of Kyoto and the hustle of Tokyo. The city’s dynamic energy and friendly locals made it a memorable stop on my cruise.

I Think You'll Enjoy:

  • Osaka Castle - This iconic castle is a symbol of Osaka’s rich history. Surrounded by secondary citadels, gates, turrets, impressive stone walls, and moats, Osaka Castle is particularly stunning during the cherry blossom season. The Nishinomaru Garden, with its 600 cherry trees, provides a breath-taking backdrop for the castle.
  • Dotonbori District - For a taste of Osaka’s vibrant nightlife and street food culture, head to the Dotonbori District. Neon lights, bustling streets, and an array of food stalls offer an energetic atmosphere that is uniquely Osaka. Be sure to try takoyaki (octopus balls) and okonomiyaki (savoury pancakes) – local specialties that are sure to delight your taste buds.

Blossom-Filled Memories to be Made in Japan

A cherry blossom cruise through Japan is more than just a vacation; it’s an immersion into a culture that is both ancient and modern, serene and vibrant! From the historic temples of Kyoto to the bustling streets of Tokyo and Osaka, every moment is an opportunity to discover something new and beautiful. Whether you’re marvelling at the Sakura in full bloom, savouring the flavours of Japanese cuisine, or riding the iconic bullet train, this journey will leave you with memories to cherish for a lifetime.
