Mekong River Cruises

Sailing on the Mighty Mekong

The Mekong River is a legendary transboundary waterway, known as the longest river in Southeast Asia and the third-longest in Asia. Beginning at the Tibetan Plateau, the mighty river winds through 2,700 miles across six countries in East and Southeast Asia, including China, Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam. It’s idyllically divided into two sections: Upper Mekong, meandering along the banks of China, Laos, Myanmar and Thailand; and Lower Mekong, consisting of Cambodia and Vietnam – where most Mekong River cruises take place.

Cruising the Mekong Delta in Vietnam and Cambodia, you’ll get the opportunity to experience the region’s diverse cultures and bustling way of life, with awe-inspiring sights along the way like the UNESCO-listed Angkor Wat and the historic Cu Chi Tunnels. Embark on an unforgettable journey through the heart of Southeast Asia, where you can visit floating markets, ride a “tuk tuk”, observe the traditional silk weaving and more!

This bucket-list-worthy adventure truly captures the essence of the Indochina region. Navigate one of the world’s most enchanting rivers with us on one of our scenic Mekong River cruises!

Popular Ports in Mekong River

The destination-packed itineraries of Mekong River cruises whisk you away on an unforgettable journey to popular ports like Ho Chi Minh, Phnom Penh and more…

Ho Chi Minh

Formerly called Saigon, Ho Chi Minh City, is the largest and most populous city in Vietnam. Set in the heart of the Mekong Delta, the city serves as the perfect pre- or post-cruise port for most river cruise itineraries. Blend in with the flurry of activity, where you’ll find an eclectic mix of colonial architecture, modern skyscrapers, striking temples and pagodas, and vibrant nightlife. Among the most remarkable examples of the city’s architectural grandeur are the Saigon Central Post Office and the Notre Dame Cathedral of Saigon. This cosmopolitan capital also played an integral role in the Vietnam War – complete with the winding Cu Chi tunnel network that Viet Cong soldiers used and the War Remnants Museum that showcases artefacts and graphic photographs related to the Vietnamese War.

Cai Be

This charming slice of Mekong Delta is famous for its stunning canals and Vietnam’s hallmark floating market. An excellent alternative for the hustle and bustle in Can Tho, Cai Be offers a more relaxed floating market – perfect for enjoying a warm bowl of pho or a hot cup of Vietnamese coffee. Thanks to its close proximity to Ho Chi Minh, the district serves as one of the trade and commerce hubs for fresh fruits, herbs and spices, seafood, handmade crafts, traditional pottery and more. From the floating markets, you can easily spot the striking Cai Be Cathedral dominating the district’s skyline. When you’re not bargaining for local items and hidden treasures, take the time to appreciate the beautiful landscapes, old houses, and rustic homestays dotting the riverbanks.

Phnom Penh

Phnom Penh, the bustling capital of Cambodia, idyllically sits at the confluence of the Mekong River, Bassac River, and Tonlé Sap River. The capital city is the hub for the Khmer Empire and French colonialists, inviting guests to immerse themselves in its French architecture, rich history, and iconic landmarks. Marvel at the colonial buildings, tree-lined boulevards, and lively markets as you take a tour of Phnom Penh on board a traditional “tuk tuk” – a motorised rickshaw with a beautifully decorated passenger seat at the rear of the motorcycle. A Mekong River cruise also lets you explore the imposing Royal Palace, home to the striking Silver Pagoda, visit the art deco Central Market set in the city’s heart, and swot up history in the Killing Fields and Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum.

Siem Reap

Discover a myriad of ancient temples in Siem Reap – the gateway to the breath-taking ruins of Angkor. This resort town is a popular pre- or post-cruise port for Mekong River cruises, which usually come with overnight hotel stays so guests have ample time to explore. Angkor Wat is the star attraction in the temple complex – the world’s largest religious monument and recognised by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site, rightfully so. Some other temples worth visiting apart from Angkor Wat are Ta Prohm, a ‘jungle temple’ that exudes an otherworldly ambience for the muscular roots growing out of the towering trees and cloaking the temple walls; and the Bayon Temple in Angkor Thom, which is dubbed as the ‘face temple’ for the smiling faces of Avalokiteshvara adorning the temple’s towers.

A Taste of Life On Board a Mekong River Cruise

A Taste of Life On Board a Mekong River Cruise

One of the best parts about cruising is that it’s not always about the destination – the journey is also an amazing experience in itself! When you’re not chasing adventure on land, you can enjoy a myriad of amenities on board that are most likely included in your cruise fare. Cruising with AmaWaterways, you can settle in a spacious, twin-balcony stateroom after an action-packed day at each destination. Indulge in tantalising local and international cuisines and sample hand-selected wines and local beers. Whether you’re in the mood to stay active in the well-equipped fitness room, take refreshing laps in the sun-deck pool, or get pampered in the massage rooms – there’s no shortage of things to do while sailing the Mekong River.
