Discover an Engineering Wonder

The Panama Canal is an impressive engineering feat that took many years of human construction, with stories of heroic tragedy and sheer determination creating the great wonder that the artificial waterway is today. All three sets of locks give the ships a lift up to 85 feet from sea level and gently lower it down, sometimes with only inches to spare on either side — a thrilling experience that you’ll only get in a Panama Canal cruise!

Panama Canal Locks

The Panama Canal locks are a lock system that lifts ships up 85 feet. There are 12 sets of locks, with 6 sets in each of the old and new sections of the canal. The Panama Canal transit passes through these magnificent locks:

Miraflores Locks

Miraflores Locks is the first set of locks you’ll encounter when you enter the canal through the Pacific Ocean entrance. This lock system elevates 54 feet in two stages, an unforgettable experience that's made even better by the beauty of the surrounding landscape and scenery. If you're not on board the ship, one of the best vantage points for watching the Panama Canal wonder is the Miraflores Locks visitor centre, the closest from downtown Panama. The viewing platform is the spot’s highlight, providing uninterrupted views of the cruise ships crossing through the locks. While waiting for the spectacle, you can catch a 3D movie about the canal’s history in the IMAX Theatre or visit the exhibition halls showcasing the canal’s history and biodiversity.

Gatún Locks

The Gatún Locks are set along the Caribbean side of Panama to the west of Colón. These massive locks are the closest to the Atlantic Ocean, featuring three chambers that lowers ships a staggering 85 feet to the level of the ocean. This lock system is the largest in the Panama Canal and each chamber could have accommodated the Titanic with room to spare. There is a covered observation deck overlooking the magnificent locks for those who want to witness the spectacle from the land, as well as the man-made Gatún Lake and the Caribbean entrance to the Panama Canal.

Pedro Miguel Locks

Pedro Miguel Locks are close to the Miraflores Locks, comprising a single chamber that lifts cruise ships 31 feet to Gatun Lake. Transiting through the Pedro Miguel Locks, you'll get a glimpse of the unique operation of this century-old engineering marvel. When it comes to viewing the Panama Canal on shore, these are often the least visited among the three as you can only see the vessels passing through the locks on highways. You can catch the impressive spectacle from the highway to Gamboa. One hundred metres beyond the locks, there’s a parking strip from where onlookers can watch ships transit the canal.

Raise Your Expectations

A Panama Canal transit is truly one of a kind, offering an opportunity to cruise one of the World’s most magnificent routes. Whether you want to experience a full-on transoceanic voyage through the canal or simply just cross through one the magnificent locks, plenty of options await and one-of-a-kind seafaring memories are certain.

A one-day experience moving through the canal on a straight-through transit allows for wildlife spotting especially in the wilder, less disturbed areas of the canal. On the other hand, in the two-day crossing, the ship arch over one lock, and then lets passengers disembark the ship. From there, cruisers can enjoy a myriad of shore excursions and take in sights they otherwise wouldn’t see on a day-long crossing.

Learn about the epic saga behind the canal’s construction and marvel at the breathtaking views on either side, the dense forests exuding life as you glide through the pass. Sail through this 80-kilometre-long feat of fantastic engineering, calling at the stunning ports like Cartagena, George Town, Colón and more!

Panama Canal FAQs

How long does it take for a ship to cross the Panama Canal?

It takes approximately 8-10 hours to successfully complete traversing the Panama Canal.

What is the history of the Panama Canal?

The idea of a passageway connecting the Pacific and Atlantic Ocean dates back to the 16th century when Spanish explorer Vasco Nunez de Balboa discovered that the isthmus of Panama was just a slim land bridge separating the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. Initially kicked off by the French in the 1880s, they hit a fair few snags and really just weren’t prepared for South America, and so instigator and sponsor Ferdinand De Lesseps called it off. The U.S. picked up where De Lesseps had left off, in 1904, providing over $50 million in funding, and completing the Panama Canal in 1914.

What makes the experience of traversing the Panama Canal so interesting?

A cruise through the Panama Canal is a one-of-a-kind and exhilarating way to travel from the Atlantic to the Pacific. These cruise trips open up a wealth of wonderful opportunities, where you can explore the postcard-perfect cities and pristine beaches, and marvel at the sheer cliff drops and the sights and sounds of the colourful birds and animals that inhabit the lush tropical forests.

When is the best time to experience the Panama Canal Transit?

While the canal operates year-round, it’s best to experience the Panama Canal crossing after the rain, from November to April, when the weather is usually sunny and dry. If you want to do it right, make sure you’re up early to snag the best on-board spots to see what the Panama Canal has to offer.

Which cruise lines offer sailings with a Panama Canal transit?

Several cruise lines offer itineraries that include a Panama Canal transit, including Norwegian Cruise Line, Explora Journeys, MSC Cruises, Princess Cruises, Holland America Line, Seabourn Cruise Line, Regent Seven Seas Cruises and Cunard Line..
