Singapore

Set sail to Singapore, a city-state steeped with sharp and constant contrasts – packed with ancient shrines and temples in the shadows of skyscrapers, as well as luxury condos set against the backdrop of tropical rainforests. This small country is often dismissed as a location only for stop-overs, but it has reinvented itself as one of the hottest destinations in the world.

Singapore’s cloud-scraping towers and modern cityscape make for breathtaking panoramas, so it’s well worth viewing the island from great height! Whether you brave the Singapore Flyer or book a ticket to the Marina Bay Sands Sky Park, there are various ways to enjoy the views and the city lights from the heights. Once you’ve soaked in enough structured steel and glass for a life-time, explore some of the city-state’s verdant greenery. Your first nature-stop must be Gardens by the Bay, Singapore’s futuristic park of colour that aligns to its paradisiacal vision of a ‘city in gardens.’ Then, you can stroll around the Singapore Botanic Gardens, an age-old tropical garden boasting a well-preserved landscape design and a UNESCO designation.

Complete your Singapore cruise with a quick side trip to Sentosa – an upscale island resort off Singapore’s southern coast, hosting pristine beaches and exciting attractions, including the Palawan Beach, Universal Studios Singapore and S.E.A. Aquarium.

Things to Do in Singapre

Strike a pose with the iconic Merlion

Singapore’s national emblem is the iconic 28-feet Merlion statue – a half-lion, half-fish, stone carving shooting water into the bay. The head embodies the city’s first name (Singapura, which means lion city in Sanskrit), while the fishtail and body epitomise the country’s humble beginnings as a small fishing town. Capturing a picture with the Merlion statue is almost an unspoken tradition for every traveller, so be sure to strike a pose and take your best shot!

Find inner peace at Singapore Botanic Gardens

Walk through this 164-year-old tropical garden filled with a beautifully landscaped flora set. A treasure trove for plant lovers and green thumbs, the Botanic Gardens prides itself on being the country’s first UNESCO Heritage Site. Sauntering around the sprawling grounds, you’ll find the National Orchid Garden – hosting the World’s largest orchid display, with over 60,000 plants and orchid plants. The recreational venue makes a perfect setting for picnicking, strolling and finding inner peace away from the city buzz. Restaurants and cafes also dot the area if you need shade after a day out in the sun.

Admire the skyline on a Singapore Flyer ride

As a vast feat in engineering, significantly larger than London’s Eye measuring in at 165 metres, the country’s equivalent showcases the cosmopolitan cityscape of tropical Lion City as well as dramatic island views of Indonesia and Malaysia. Not only does Singapore Flyer give you the chance to view the city by day, but the experience past dusk, whilst buildings are illuminated, is unparalleled. Don’t miss out on the offer of cocktails and champagne, and if you’re feeling particularly extravagant, book in advance for a world-class four course meal with the backdrop of Singaporean spires!

Singapore Cruises FAQs

Is there a tipping culture in Singapore?

Tipping in Singapore is not customary and most often not expected, but a service charge is commonly added to your bill. However, if you’re feeling a little generous, offering a small gratuity to hotel staff, cab drivers and tour guides will be greatly appreciated. Note that there are some areas that prohibit tipping, including Changi Airport.

The local currency used in Singapore is the Singaporean dollar. Credit cards are widely accepted in restaurants, bars, shops and taxis, with mobile payments available in most locations.
