Discover Auckland, Wellington and more

A paradise perfected in Oceania, New Zealand abounds with rolling hills, misty mountains, lush forests, pristine lakes and beaches and of course the breathtaking New Zealand sounds! From the sea, there are plenty of opportunities to discover New Zealand — whether you’re on a brief tour of just a few cities, a more substantial holiday calling in at ports across Australia and New Zealand, or on a Australasia cruise or even an ultimate world adventure. With beautiful ports like Auckland, Akaroa, Christchurch, Dunedin, Tauranga, and Wellington to visit, there’s so much to see and do!

New Zealand’s biggest city is a popular start and end point for most Australasian cruises — Auckland is bustling, cosmopolitan and yet comfortably friendly to locals and travellers alike.  Step ashore to explore a lush, leafy urban cityscape, filled with stunning landmarks and renowned art galleries like the iconic Sky Tower. For a taste of history and culture, Dunedin is the place to be. Known as the Edinburgh of New Zealand, the quaint city is packed with a unique fusion of Scottish and Maori heritages. Nature enthusiasts and green thumbs will have a wonderful time in Christchurch, nicknamed the ‘Garden City’, after its vast green expanses. Experience the perfect blend of history, culture, architecture and relaxation on a New Zealand cruise, and sample the outstanding food and wine as you explore the cities, all whilst cloaked in the warmth of its sunny climate.

New Zealand Cruise Highlights

Bay of Islands

Bay of Islands is a beach lover oasis, filled with fine white sand and crystal-clear waters. It’s home to over 140 subtropical islands and has one of the bluest skies in the world! As you’d expect, there are plenty of opportunities for active outdoor pursuits here, so these islands are the perfect place to roam for the adrenaline junkies. Enjoy big-game fishing and hunt out Maori cultural artefacts — these islands are host to an abundance of rich heritage. Be sure to drop by the 19th-century whaling port of Russell, where the waterfront promenade boasts endless historical reminders of its days as the country’s first colonial capital.

Christchurch Botanic Gardens

Perfect for nature lovers and green thumbs, Christchurch Botanic Gardens is a must-see attraction in the ‘Garden City,’ which displays an ever-changing flora depending on the season of your visit. Admire the full bloom of daffodils in spring, walk on the path of summer roses, witness the changing of leaves’ colours in autumn and get cosy in the multiple conservatories housing a variety of plants and flowers in winter. There’s also a plethora of options to eat, shop and drink within the gardens. Grab a cup of hot coffee in the cafe before a leisurely stroll and buy something to take home from the award-winning visit centre.

Larnach Castle

Visit the only castle in New Zealand set at the heart of the picturesque city of Dunedin. Larnach Castle is a mock castle built by the entrepreneur-politician William Larnach in 1871 for his first wife Eliza. Decades have been spent on the Castle's restoration after the Barker Family bought the property in 1967. Now, the prestigious manor features a living collection of age-old antiques and furniture, where you can get a glimpse of living in the Victorian era. Learn about scandalous and tragic stories surrounding the historic house, take a walk around the beautifully-landscaped grounds and enjoy the warm welcome by the Highland dancers performing bagpipe music!

New Zealand Sounds

Despite not actually being a port of call, a lot of cruises include New Zealand’s Fiordland as part of the cruise itinerary for its iconic beauty and world-class fame. With a beauty that rivals the fjords of Norway and Alaska, even described by renowned novelist Rudyard Kipling as the “eighth natural wonder of the world,” New Zealand Sounds are a spectacular part of every cruising experience. Typically from Dunedin, you’ll sail on to Dusky Sound, and then Doubtful Sound and the most popular Milford Sound.

  • Dusky is a wildlife paradise, where you’ll spot dolphins and seals frolicking in the waters, and birds like kakas, mottled petrels and keas flying overhead. It’s also the largest and most complex of the country’s fjords, complete with vast waterfall-carved cliff faces.

  • Doubtful is best for penguin-spotting, home to blue penguins and fiordland crested penguins, as well as boasting a unique freshwater and saltwater ecosystem due to the freshwater from the mountains.

  • Milford is a small yet the most famous among the fifteen fjords in New Zealand. The scale of the surrounding mountains puts you and your ship in perspective. It’s also part of the Te Wahipounamu World Heritage Site, a natural haven for wildlife, many hidden in the rainforest that sits on the majestic Mitre Peak mountain-centrepiece.

Surrounded by awe-inspiring beaches, winding hiking trails and a whole host of things to do, Auckland is New Zealand’s largest and most diverse city.
