Discover Africa's Exotic Wonders

Africa, the second-largest continent, offers an eclectic mix of adventure and tranquillity! On an extraordinary African voyage, you can take a game drive or a camel ride on the vast arid landscapes; enjoy a shopping spree in one of Africa’s largest malls; and discover the secrets of the past with captivating history tours. From the rugged safari adventures in Serengeti to informative wine tastings in Cape Winelands, you’ll find it all on an African cruise.

Many sailings across Africa embark from Cape Town, the capital of South Africa, with the Atlantic Ocean to the front and centred around the Table Mountain with tours sometimes included in the luxury cruise itineraries. Mauritius, located off the Eastern Coast of Africa, is another popular embarkation port and is packed with beautiful beaches, lagoons and reefs. In Kenya and Tanzania, you can witness The Great Migration, which is the world’s largest terrestrial mammal migration. Travellers who are keen on unearthing the region’s rich history can visit Robben Island, the notorious prison that once held Nelson Mandela and is now a living museum, while wildlife enthusiasts can join a coastal boat tour in Port Elizabeth to spot rare sea birds and whales. Every corner of Africa is unique and exciting, from admiring the stunning architecture and scenery in Cape Town to getting up close and personal with the famous Big Five on a safari tour, so there’s always something new to enjoy and indulge your senses!

Africa Cruise Highlights

Serengeti National Park

Tanzania is home to the Serengeti National Park, where most of the sought-after jaw-dropping scenes of the Great Migration, a massive annual migration of wildebeest, zebra and antelopes, take place. This sprawling national park also serves as a wild game park, perfect for viewing and getting up close with the notorious Big Five, comprising the African Elephant, Cape Buffalo, Lion, Black Rhino and Leopard, be sure so keep an eye out for them! You can also catch the mating season from June to July, or witness the dramatic crossing over of the herds across the Grumeti River.

Table Mountain, South Africa

Dominating the Cape Town skyline is Table Mountain, a striking mountain that serves as home to abundant flora and fauna, including the exotic Table Mountain Ghost Frog that can only be found in the area! The mountain rises at a height of 1,085 metres above sea level and has a flat top, resembling a table top. Reach its peak via a cable car ride or you may prefer to hike on foot! From the summit, you’ll enjoy unobstructed views of Cape Town and Table Bay.

Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe

Victoria Falls is a charming town in western Zimbabwe and the gateway to its namesake waterfalls! Forming the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe, the Zambezi River plummets over the cliff and into the Boiling Pot and through a series of basalt gorges – creating a staggering scene of bleak mist visible from kilometres away. The attraction’s crown jewel is the Devil's Pool, a natural infinity pool formed by years of erosion, perched on the edge of the falls. As the world’s greatest sheet of falling water, Victoria Falls tops the bucket-list of many!

History and Culture

Africa is widely believed to be the ‘cradle of humankind,’ specifically the region of South Africa, for it’s the only continent where fossil remains of the earliest human beings have been discovered. The continent’s contemporary cultures and traditions are significantly influenced by their colourful and turbulent past. Historical and cultural offerings are aplenty in Africa, from South Africa’s history of brutal clashes and the gruelling resistance to apartheid to the ornate Omani imperial architecture and vibrant cultures in the island of Zanzibar. Each indigenous group has its own distinct traditional practices, rituals, art, music, and literature, through which the personal identity of every country has formed. The continent offers a plethora of cultural and historical experiences to immerse yourselves in, once you lay anchor in its ports:

  • Explore Zanzibar’s enchanting Stone Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that was once the epicentre of the spice trade, and is now filled with history-rich aromatic markets and spice bazaars.
  • Get a taste of The Boma, a four-course feast highlighting traditional Zimbabwean dishes, accompanied by nightly entertainment and folk performances.
  • Take a ferry ride to Robben Island, an offshore island from Cape Town offering a glimpse into South Africa’s historic struggle against the Apartheid - also used as the prison for Nelson Mandela’s incarceration.

Things To Do In Africa

Spectate the Greatest Show on Earth

The Great Migration is referred to as “the Greatest Show on Earth.” It’s an annual phenomenon where an immense scale of wild beasts, zebras, antelopes, and other wild animals move together in a treacherous expedition. During their perilous pursuit for grazing grounds and water supply, they’ll have to battle against prides of lions in the wild and swarms of crocodiles on river crossings. Witness this jaw-dropping spectacle, as the incredible wildlife fight for survival!

Marvel at the French-colonial inspired architecture in Casablanca

Walk down memory lane in Casablanca! Although often glossed over in the shadows of the historically-rich Marrakecs and Fes, Casablanca will surprise you with its fascinating architecture - oozing a blend of European charm and Moroccan panache! Boasting fine Art Deco buildings, the city will transport you back to the French colonial era. One of the most notable architectural treasures of the city is Hassan II Mosque, one of the largest mosques in the world, that pays homage to the former king. You can also wander through the maze-like alleys of Medina, the old city district, to get a glimpse of the traditional local lifestyle.

See the emblematic camels in the Sahara Desert

This endless stretch of sand dunes glimmer in golden hues and offer a plethora of activities to immerse with nature, such as watching the sunset and sunrise, gazing at the stars, and sand surfing! Spotting a camel is quintessential when you’re visiting the Sahara Desert. You can also take an epic camel ride and gracefully trek the sandy terrain, then cap off your day in a cosy tent for an authentic nomad experience.

Natural Wonders

Teeming with majestic wildlife, world-famous natural reserves, and spectacular landscapes, Africa doesn’t miss a beat when it comes to natural wonders! Get ready to be amazed by the gorgeous waterfalls, dry deserts, canyons, verdant mountains, volcanic craters, sparkling lakes, and iridescent coral reefs. Home to the world’s longest river and largest hot desert, Africa brims with spectacular natural scenery that’s sure to wow all your senses.

  • Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, is Africa’s tallest mountain rising at 19,340 feet elevation and is often blanketed by snow.
  • The Fish River Canyon in southern Namibia, is the world’s second largest canyon after the USA's Grand Canyon. It displays the marvellous aftermath of many geological processes that have occurred over millions of years.
  • Enjoy bird-watching at Enseleni Nature Reserve in Richards Bay, and admire flocks of butterflies dancing by in a whirl of colour!
  • Gqeberha’s (formerly Port Elizabeth) idyllic location along the Algoa Bay, makes way for plenty of pristine beaches, perfect for swimming and surfing!

Africa Cruises FAQs

How long does a cruise to Africa take?

Typically, cruises around Africa take anywhere between 10 to 21 days, depending on the routes and itineraries. Most sailings depart from Cape Town in South Africa or Mauritius and traverse through Madagascar, Mozambique, Namibia, Seychelles, Tanzania, and Kenya.

Is there a cruise ship that goes to Africa?

There are several cruise lines that offer sailings to Africa, such as Norwegian Cruise Line and Azamara with round-trip journeys from Cape Town, Silversea with Grand Africa voyages, Cunard Line that pairs Mauritius and Madagascar cruises, and MSC Cruises that tours around South Africa.

What are the most popular ports for an Africa cruise?

Cape Town tops the list of the most popular ports, where most cruisings usually begin. Other South African ports, such as Richards Bay and Durban, are also in demand on an Africa cruise. For sailings outside South Africa, some of the sought-after ports are Port Louis in Mauritius, Mombasa in Kenya, Nose Be in Madagascar, Walvis Bay in Namibia, Maputo in Mozambique, and Mahe in Seychelles.
