Chase the Colours

It’s truly a dreamy sight when autumn is upon us to take a cruise through New England up to Canada and see the beautiful trees in the countryside as a canopy of scarlets and golds. Here are our favourite places to see the breathtaking Fall Foliage:

Maine, New England

Idyllically located in the most northern state in America, the colours in Maine are at their prime from late September to mid-October. Dazzling hues of yellow, red and orange sweep the mountain drives and farms in the West, in particular around Rangeley Lakes — wind through the 28-mile Lake Tahoe National Scenic Byway and be rewarded by the magnificent views deep blue alpine lake fringed with towering pines bursting in kaleidoscope of colours! If you prefer taking in the striking scenery up-close and personal, hiking the Acadia National Park, Moosehead Lake and Baxter State Park also offer some vibrant autumn displays with rich wildlife to compliment the beauty.

Massachusetts, New England

From quaint towns to scenic drives and hikes, Massachusetts is high in vantage points for fall foliage viewing. The rural region of Berkshires, home to the state’s highest peak, easily comes to mind when it comes to providing the best autumn displays in the state. Here, you can expect to marvel at the changing autumn palette ranging from golden yellows to bright oranges to deep reds, plus a thriving farm-to-table food scene and endless outdoor adventures to match! Hit the Mohawk Trail and be wowed by the awe-inspiring views of autumnal hues emerging from the hillside trees and sweeping valleys. History meets nature at Walden Pond State Reservation, where the eye-catching reflection of hundreds of glorious trees mirrors on the still waters of the 62-acre pond.

Ontario, Canada

The province of Ontario is one of the most perfect settings in Canada to catch the magical fall colours!  Just north of Toronto, Algonquin Provincial Park is a major hotspot for enjoying the autumnal beauty of Ontario — the age-old maple and oak trees paint the forests in warm tones and cast a stunning display of gold and crimson on the crystal clear lakes and rivers. Feeling a little bit adventurous? Take a drive from Smith Falls to Merrickville along the UNESCO-listed Rideau Canal and glimpse at the line of deciduous trees adorning the canal sides that show off vibrant colours. Another premier spot for every leaf-peeper is the Agawa Canyon that comes alive when the vivid red and yellow leaves reflect in the sparkling river running along the canyon.

The Scenic Transition of Seasons

The crisp, breezy air and vibrant colours mark the beginning of yet another beautiful season — autumn! Chilly mornings make perfect for a cup of hot chocolate, warm afternoons beckon travellers to appreciate the outdoors, and with each cold autumn night, the dropping temperatures urge the colours of leaves to transform into earth and golden shades. From sprawling parks to scenic drives with epic autumn displays, let yourself get swept away like the bright-hued leaves that are soon to temporarily shed from the branches of trees as the winter season takes its post.

Why take a fall foliage cruise? As summer draws to a close and air turns cooler, many of the cruise holidays also come to a memorable end, so there’s more likely lesser crowds on the destinations you’d like to visit. Many picturesque towns and villages doused in beautiful colours await in New England and Canada, such as Kennebunkport and Portland in Maine; Williamstown in Massachusetts; and Halifax and Montreal in Canada. Fall in love with fall as you witness the landscapes ablaze in golden yellows and fiery reds!

Follow the Leaves

See the Niagara Falls

Niagara Falls is one of the most renowned wonders of the world, straddling the border between the United States and Canada. No trip to either in the US or the Land of the Maple Leaf is complete without marvelling at the staggering splendour of the majestic cascading waters. While here, be sure to drop by the Niagara Parks Botanical Gardens and enjoy the brilliant autumn flora as you wander around the 90-acres of the well-manicured gardens.

Step back in time in Old Québec

History buffs and culture vultures are drawn to Old Québec. The UNESCO-listed old town is packed with picture-perfect hotels, cafes, boutique shops and fascinating houses lining the cobbled streets and stone alleyways. Québec is known for its autumn colours, thanks to its sugar maple trees, making it a perfect setting for fall foliage viewing. After spending a cosy day in the Old Québec, you can take a trip to Mont Tremblant, set against the backdrop of the Laurentian Mountains that transform into a landscape of gorgeous colour every fall.

Discover downtown Portland

History meets modernity in this dynamic city, with ocean views and Victorian-era homes to enchant every visitor. The many galleries and museums of Portland is where the arts come alive, with the air thick with curiosity and culture. Fishing wharves and converted 19th-century warehouses, featuring restaurants, bars and boutique shops, line the Old Port waterfront. The fall foliage in Portland is also an unmissable experience, when nature puts on a spectacular show of ever-changing colours!

Fall Foliage FAQs

What clothes do you wear in the fall?

Autumn is the season when the temperature slowly becomes milder as winter comes close, so you might want to wear something to keep you warm but comfortable at the same time when you set foot outside to admire the fall foliage. If you’re going for a casual look, it’s recommended to wear a short-sleeved shirt inside and layer it with a lightweight fleece, hoodie or jacket. You can pair it up with a low-top sneakers to complete your effortless outfit. Regardless, the number 1 rule is to dress however you want and what makes you feel good. There’s no standard rules for fashion anyways!

What is fall foliage?

‘Foliage’ is a fancy term that alludes to leaves of a tree or plant. Meanwhile, ‘fall’ is the season between summer and winter — the autumnal equinox when the temperatures drop and days get shorter as it moves towards the winter solstice. When put together, the term ‘fall foliage’ refers to the spectacular phenomenon of leaves changing colour, marking the transition of seasons.

When is the best time for a fall foliage cruise?

The fall foliage season peaks from September to October in New England and Canada when the colours are in their most vibrant state and the weather is warm and sunny for outdoor afternoon strolls. Time your fall foliage cruise towards the end of October if you prefer to see the falling leaves departing the tree branches and feeling the crunch beneath your shoes as you walk on the park grounds.

Where is the best place to see fall foliage?

New England and Canada offer the most perfect settings for viewing the amazing fall colours. If you’re travelling from late September to early October, the fall foliage is its prime in the northern parts of New England like Maine and Vermont, as well as the provinces of Nova Scotia and Ontario in Canada. For mid- to late October, Massachusetts and New Hampshire offer show-stopping displays of autumn hues! Outside New England and Canada, France sees the spectacle from late October to early November.  If you’re visiting Japan for autumn, Nara prefecture is an ideal viewing spot, especially a little later in the year between mid-October and early December.

Which cruise lines offer fall foliage cruises?

Many mainstream cruise lines offer cruises that allow you to soak up the fall foliage scenery ashore and onboard. The autumn cruise itineraries commonly sail across the scenic ports of Canada and New England, which are arguably the best destinations for leaf-peeping. The long list includes Norwegian Cruise Line, Princess Cruises, Celebrity Cruises, MSC Cruises, Royal Caribbean International, Seabourn and Carnival.
