Taipei 101 is a 101-story tower dominating the capital’s skyline and was the world’s tallest building before Burj Khalifa. The observatory deck on the 91st floor offers panoramic views of the cityscape while the Skyline 460 is the highest outdoor observation deck in Asia. This architectural marvel also makes a perfect spot to welcome the New Year – watch the skyscraper light up with a spectacular fireworks display once the clock strikes midnight!
Ride a gondola and get a taste of romance at Love River – a scenic waterway that meanders through the city. The river is also called the Kaohsiung Canal, but since it has become a hotspot for couples and lovers – the river was reputed as ‘Love River.’ Besides a romantic gondola ride, you can also take a leisurely walk with your significant other along the riverbanks – enhanced by paved walkways, greenery works and adorned by stone pillars with iron chains.
Set in the Taroko National Park, this namesake gorge acts as the park landmark formed by the gushing waters of the Liwu River. Trekking on the trails spread across the sprawling park, you’ll see the Eternal Spring Shrine – a memorial shrine tucked away on a lush cliffside with a cascading waterfall beneath. You’ll also reach the Tunnel of Nine Turns, one of the area’s scenic sections that winds high along the mountains – offering hikers an opportunity to catch incredible views of the Liwu River at an imposing height.
Mingle with the young crowds and enjoy the bustling atmosphere of Ximending District – a neighbourhood that transports visitors into a wonderful world of entertainment, shopping and food! A haven for foodies, this vibrant district is where you can taste and sample some of Taiwan’s best street delights as night markets pop into the alleys once the evening arrives! You can also browse through the retail stores and independent stalls lining the streets, and some familiar brands like Uniqlo might pique your attention!
With age-old pine trees dotting the area and providing ample shade for resting, you’ll surely be up and about for a refreshing afternoon stroll during your visit at Pine Garden. Set inside the dense cluster of pinewood, you’ll find a two-story quasi-western arcade building that served as a military base during the Japanese colonial rule. The fusion of historical buildings and lush greenery makes this well-preserved site an oasis for history buffs and nature lovers alike!
The Dragon and Tiger Pagodas is a colourful temple directly rising above Lotus Lake. It’s one of the most unique sights in Taiwan, so be sure not to miss it on your trip! Built in 1976, the structure comprises two seven-story pagoda towers – one is dedicated to the dragon and the other is to a tiger. It’s a custom to enter the dragon temple and exit via the tiger as it’s believed to bring good luck! Once you’re done exploring the two towers, you can watch the tortoise paddling on the pond waters.
Tipping is generally not expected and sometimes even not accepted in Taiwan, except for bellhops and service personnel in international hotels. Since the pandemic, it has been a norm for most restaurants to add 10% service charge to the bills.
The New Taiwan dollar is the official currency used in Taiwan. Besides small shops and some family-run businesses, most commercial establishments readily accept credit card payments.
Autumn is the best season to visit Taiwan, which runs from October to December, with October and November being the most ideal time. These months have the lowest possibility for rainfall, with pleasant weather in the mornings and cool temperatures in evenings.
