Featured Cruises to the 7 Wonders of the World

The 7 Wonders of the World

Selected from over 200 iconic sites and landmarks, these are the man-made architectural marvels that made it to the list of the new 7 wonders of the world:

Great Wall of China

The Great Wall of China is a reputable man-made border wall – where rich history, unique architectural splendour and breathtaking natural sceneries meet. These extensive series of stone fortifications were built for centuries to protect China from outside attacks and preserve its cultures from foreign influences. It’s the longest structure to have been made by human hands hundreds of years ago, stretching over 21,000 kilometres – even drawing myths and speculations that it’s visible from space. Although this claim was later debunked by scientists, it does not detract from the wonder’s grand stature.

The Taj Mahal, India

Marvel at the Taj Mahal – a star attraction in Agra, India and an epitome of enduring love, commissioned by Emperor Shah Jahan to safeguard the tomb of his beloved wife. This ivory-white marble mausoleum is a prime example of Mughal architecture, with an ethereal beauty that’s spoken in awe of every eye that lays on it. This architectural marvel enchants visitors with its arch-and-dome façade of clean white marble framed by four striking minarets. Such a dramatic sight is mirrored by a reflecting pool in front of the monument surrounded by landscaped gardens, perfectly replicating its timeless elegance!

Petra, Jordan

Wandering around the lost city that time has long forgotten is an unmissable experience in Jordan. Petra is a well-known archeological site in Jordan’s southwestern desert, which was half-built and half-carved by the Nabataean Arabs into the sandstone cliff nestled within rugged mountains and canyons. Whilst it oozes a puzzling abandoned locale vibe now, the ‘Rose City’ was a thriving capital and a vital trading centre during the Hellenistic and Roman periods. Take a tour of the age-old city’s remarkable ruins as you follow the trail from the Siq, winding past the royal tombs and temples, to the most-famous Treasury.

The Roman Colosseum, Italy

An icon of ancient Rome in Italy, the Colosseum is the largest amphitheatre in the world that withstood the test of time. This massive stone elliptical theatre idyllically sits in the centre of Rome, within walking distance to the city's main train station Roma Termini. The arena was constructed during the reign of the Flavian emperors to host sports and events, such as gladiator combats, animal hunt, mock sea battles, dramas based on Classic mythology and even public executions. Step back in time as you discover the remnants of the historical landmark that carries an intriguing gladiatorial past and the long-standing legacy of the Roman Empire.

Christ the Redeemer, Brazil

The colossal 98-feet-tall statue of Christ the Redeemer dominates the skyline of Rio de Janeiro – an ever-present figure perched atop the peak of Mount Corcovado. The clean white landmark is made of reinforced concrete and soapstone – soaring over the landscape on top of a 26-foot-high pedestal, with both arms wide open, symbolising peace and protection. The hike up to the imposing landmark offers not just a glimpse of the architectural marvel but also awe-inspiring views of the Rio cityscape, its stunning harbour and beyond. The Art Deco statue is also accessible via bus or tram if you don’t want to break a major sweat.

Chichén Itzá, Mexico

Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula is home to the vast pre-Columbian complex established by the Mayan people – which houses a myriad of pyramids and temples, exhibiting the incredible fusion of diverse architectural styles and techniques from the Maya-Toltec civilisation that once lived and prospered in the ancient city. One of Chichén Itzá’s must-see stone monuments is the El Castillo, otherwise known as the Temple of Kukulkan – a giant step pyramid at the heart of the Mayan complex that serves as a testament to the advanced astronomical and architectural prowess of the Maya-Toltec civilisation.

Machu Picchu, Peru

Crowning the summit of the world-renowned Andes Mountain Ranges is the 15th-century Inca citadel Machu Picchu. Dubbed the ‘Lost City of the Incas,’ it holds many stories and secrets about the Inca Empire. The mystifying citadel has sparked enthusiastic debates over the time as the purpose of its creation remains unknown to date – making its underlying mystery the centre of its quintessential charm and appeal that attracts many tourists around the globe! The entire site spans over 30,000 hectares, encompassing misty palaces, baths, temples, plazas, mausoleums and more.

How were the 7 wonders of the world selected?

The seven wonders of the ancient world were chosen by adept Hellenic travellers passing through Persian, Babylonian, and Egyptian lands. Meanwhile, the new 7 wonders of the world were selected via an online popularity poll initiated by a Swiss company to prove the power of the Internet to engage people across the globe in the early 2000s. The results were announced in 2007 with over a 100 million of votes tallied. All of the 7 wonders of the world are recognised by UNESCO as World Heritage Sites.

What are the seven wonders of the ancient world?

The seven wonders of the ancient world are: the Great Pyramid of Giza, Hanging Gardens of Babylon, Statue of Zeus, Temple of Artemis, Mausoleum of Halicarnassus, Colossus of Rhodes and Pharos (Lighthouse) of Alexandria. Out of all seven, the Pyramid of Giza is the sole wonder of the ancient world that exists today.

When is the best time to visit each of the 7 wonders of the world?

The best time to visit the Great Wall of China is during autumn (September to November) for comfortable temperatures and the postcard-perfect fall foliage! For the Taj Mahal, summertime (March to June) is the  most ideal season for warm weather and sunrise is the peak time of the day for the best photography opportunities. Weather-wise, the perfect time to go to Petra is during spring (March to May), allowing you to enjoy the outdoors with milder weather without having to endure the sweltering heat of a summer day. If you’re planning a trip to Rome to see the Colosseum, make sure to schedule your visit for the shoulder seasons of spring or autumn to avoid the swarm of crowds and still enjoy dry weather. For a better chance to see Christ the Redeemer on a bright day without the clouds or fog covering it, schedule your trip to Rio de Janeiro between September and October. If you time your visit to the Chichen Itza from November to March, you’re surely in for a special treat when the crowds aren't overwhelming and the weather is clement. Finally, the dry season (March to October) is the most ideal time to climb up the Machu Picchu for clear and sunny skies.
