Explore the stunning Maltese islands

Nestled between Sicily and the Northern Africa coast, Malta is blessed with stunning coastlines along the Mediterranean Sea. The archipelago comprises five major islands but only three of which are inhabited. Valletta, the island nation’s tiny capital, is a walled city inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage Site list, alongside the Megalithic Temples and Ħal Saflieni Hypogeum. A cultural hub for Baroque art and a rich ancient past, with the pristine Mediterranean seascape enclosing its borders, Malta holidays are perfect for those who wish to set sail straight from a United Kingdom port on our best no-fly cruises or cruises from Southampton

Get lost in the winding streets of Valletta, featuring impressive Baroque architecture, such as St. John's Co-Cathedral and the Grandmasters Palace. We included this quaint capital to our top five Mediterranean gems for its palpable cultural heritage and old-world charm! Where deep-blue seas meet fascinating military history, be amazed by the staggering Grand Harbour overlooking the Mediterranean Sea and dotted with limestone buildings and ships. Mdina was the capital of Malta before Valletta; travel back in time as you stroll through its silent, meandering streets filled with Baroque buildings, palaces and churches. And if you’re up to soak up the sun, take a perfect day trip to  Blue Lagoon in Comino, the smallest of the three Maltese islands. Malta Cruises Highlights

Upper Barrakka Gardens

Breathe fresh air and stroll around the Upper Barrakka Gardens, a public garden in Valletta with a quaint terrace that provides visitors uninterrupted views of the fortified city, the Grand Harbour and beyond to the Mediterranean Sea. Travellers are welcome to enter this well-maintained garden everyday. Most days at around noon, you can also witness the firing of cannons in the Saluting Battery.

Blue Lagoon, Comino

Blue Lagoon is a world-famous natural pool on the island of Comino, considered to be the small island’s crown jewel. It gained fame for its crystal-clear waters reflecting  the blue sky with a magnificent cyan, with a white sandy bottom adding to its splendour. This spectacular lagoon is perfect not just for beach bums but also for water sports enthusiasts seeking exciting adventures, such as snorkelling, kayaking and banana boat riding.

Ggantija Temples

Ggantija Temples is part of the UNESCO-listed megalithic temples in Malta, found in the island of Gozo, which is considered one of the oldest man-made structures in the world. This pre-historic monument, consisting of two structures, served as a centre for community gatherings during a civilisation that has long ago disappeared. Today, the site boasts a wealth of archaeological treasures, including animal bones and stone hearths.

History and Culture

Malta’s culture is a combined upshot of diverse societies and civilisations that lived in and came across the Maltese islands throughout the history. Due to the archipelago’s strategic location, it has been seized and governed by several foreign colonies over the centuries. The succession of powers include Phoenicians, Arabs, Normans, Romans, Aragonese, French and the British. The Latin European heritage is predominant due to its strong influence as the longest rulers, with Arab influences playing a role in the Maltese language and the Mediterranean diet. Malta also shares most of its religious beliefs, customs and cuisines with its Sicilian and Italian neighbours. On your Malta cruise, get to know about the archipelago’s fascinating history and culture by visiting these important sites:

  • Listed as a World Heritage Site in 1981, Ħal Saflieni Hypogeum is a Neolithic subterranean structure, comprising interconnecting rock-cut chambers set on three distinct levels.

  • St. John’s Co-Cathedral that reflects the impressive Baroque architecture, adorned with intricate artworks by the renowned Italian painter, Caravaggio.

  • Fort St. Elmo - National War Museum is a star-shaped fort showcasing the region’s rich military history.

Things to Do in Malta

Dive to see the Azure Window in Gozo

Azure Window was a natural limestone arch in Dwejra Bay in Gozo island, attracting several tourists to pose for a photo! The landmark has claimed more fame when it was used as the setting for Khal Drogo and Daenerys’ wedding in the very first episode of Game of Thrones. However, decades of natural erosion have caused the arch’s pieces to fall into the sea until it completely collapsed in 2017 due to heavy storms and strong winds. The ruins of the remarkable structure now create a striking underwater attraction, making it one of the popular diving sites in the Mediterranean - a beautiful disaster for scuba divers!

Go museum-hopping in Valletta

Once awarded as the European Capital of Culture, Valletta hosts a wealth of incredible museums that provide insight to the region’s storied past and rich culture. Step inside the Palace Staterooms featuring magnificent tapestries and beautiful artworks, with elegant ceiling paintings gracing the corridors. Discover Malta’s military history in the National War Museum, and see the arms collection and artillery pieces used for battles for fortifications. And the National Museum of Archeology transports visitors into a journey of 7,000 years of history as far back as the long lost civilisations.

Take a walk through time at the ‘Silent City’ Mdina

Mdina was Malta’s capital before Valletta took over, leaving the former capital uninhabited that locals started calling it a ‘ghost town’. Exploring the old walled city is like taking a walk through time, with barely any traffic from vehicles since no cars are allowed in the city in an effort to maintain its antiquity and tranquillity - it has gained a moniker ‘silent city’ because of it. You’ll be greeted by the stunning Mdina gate that stood for centuries, which also served as the set of the King’s Landing entrance in one of the episodes of Game of Thrones. You can also drop by the St. Paul’s Cathedral, arguably the city’s crown jewel, and admire its awe-inspiring architecture both from the inside and the outside.

Natural Wonders

Besides its interesting history and culture, an abundance of natural spectacles dominate the Maltese archipelago, from sparkling turquoise sea and picturesque coasts to sprawling wild reserves and beautifully curated gardens. If you’re in search for refreshing coastal winds, take a relaxing retreat with a Malta cruise and visit these natural wonders during your shore excursion:

  • Dingli Cliffs rise on the highest point of elevation in the island of Malta, perfect for viewing the pristine seas and enjoying picnics.

  • Gozo’s Dwejra Inland Sea is home to the fallen Azure Window and the famous diving site Fungus Rock, surrounded by dramatic rock formations and wave-battered cliffs.

  • Blue Lagoon, Comino’s main claim of fame, is an expansive sheltered azure bath offering panoramic Mediterranean Sea sightings.
